The Royal College of Art (RCA) is the only entirely postgraduate institution of university status devoted to research and knowledge exchange, teaching and practice in art, design, architecture, communication and humanities. The College’s international reputation as the world's number one art and design university has been recognised for four successive years by the highly-regarded QS World Ranking survey in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. In 2017/18 the College has 2,000 students registered for MA, MRes, MPhil and PhD degrees, over 400 full- and part-time academic, technical and administrative staff, and more than 1,500 visiting professors and lecturers. It was ranked the most research-intensive art and design institution in REF2014, and undertakes research collaborations with leading international partners in business, industry, governments, charities and the cultural sector.

Launched in May 2016, the Intelligent Mobility Design Centre (IMDC) leads research at the intersection of people, mobility and technology within a complex and changing urban and global environment. It provides a space in which manufacturers can explore and experiment with disruptive innovation models to transform the future of their industry and it offers a research environment in which policy-makers and urban planners can develop innovative, design-led solution to our future mobility needs.

The new post of Deputy Director IMDC presents an opportunity to support the Director of IMDC, Professor Dale Harrow, in developing and leading this new industry-facing research initiative, building a cross-disciplinary team, setting new research agendas and undertaking collaborative projects with partners across academia, industry and local and national government. The successful candidate will bring an international research profile to the centre, applying design-led insights to collaborations with other disciplines at the interface of design and intelligent mobility. The successful candidate will also bring experience of winning and delivering major design-focused research grants and knowledge exchange projects with industry.

If you have the vision, drive, and research and academic management experience to take the IMDC forward, we hope you will pursue this opportunity.
