Cranfield University is an exclusively postgraduate university specialising in technology and management research whilst demonstrating global leadership in the quality of its education provision (both to students and to executive-level professionals).
Cranfield is number one in the UK for training and producing engineering and technology postgraduates, ranked number one for defence education and fourth for mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing engineering education in the UK. Cranfield has also been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize in Further and Higher Education four times, for our Fellowship in Manufacturing Management (2005), work in Humanitarian De-Mining (2007), Aviation Safety through research and training in air accident investigation (2011) and for our research on water and sanitation for developing countries (2015). Critical intellectual mass at Cranfield has recently been organised around eight major themes, Energy, Environment, Leadership and Management, Manufacturing, Transport, Aerospace, Defence and Security, and Agrifood; each supported by a theme leader who provides strategic direction and thought leadership. The themes reflect the core strengths and they pull together the breadth of the talent and experience across the University enabling researchers to apply a multi-disciplinary approach that enables cross-boundary collaboration, benefiting researchers, students and clients.
The aerospace theme is led by Professor Iain Gray, and represents one of the largest academic centres in Western Europe for strategic applied research, development and design within aerospace. This is represented by a number of advanced facilities, tools and expertise in the field, including capabilities unique to Cranfield, and several close commercial partnerships with companies, including Airbus, BAE Systems, Boeing and Rolls Royce. The aerospace theme at Cranfield has also seen significant University investment over recent years, including the development of a new Aerospace Integration Research Centre. This is to be built at Cranfield University, with Airbus and Rolls-Royce as co-investment partners, following the award of funding from the Higher Education.
This is fixed-term position to support the delivery of research on communication datalinks and network systems with an industrial partner for aerodrome operations. The project will involve both simulation modelling and experimental validation of the results. The aim of the project is to first model in simulation (e.g. using NS3) the network (WiFi, 3/4G and AeroMACS) and analyse the results e.g. to assess the impact on quality of service etc. The experimental validation will cover all the above mentioned networks and the hand over to provide and guarantee the QoS. The experimental validation would possibly involve the use Cranfield’s Boeing 737 on the ground. The post requires the candidate to have excellent programming skills (good knowledge of C/C++ is a must), working with network simulators e.g. NS3 and Matlab/Simulink. Some understanding of antenna systems would be an advantage. The aim will be to assess the define benefits and monetarisation for possible solutions.
The post will involve collaboration with academic and industrial partners. You will need to be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with staff from all organisations across a wide range of disciplines to discuss research methodologies. The ability to communicate, rapidly assess information, resolve problems and respond in a timely manner is essential. A PhD (or close to completion) in computer science, communication systems, electrical and electronics or related engineering/science subject is essential, together with experience of modelling of communication networks and publications in major national or international journals and conferences. Industrial experience would be an advantage.
