The University of Bristol is seeking to appoint a new Director of Research and Enterprise Development (RED) responsible for providing the overall leadership and coordination of the activities of the Division. RED was created in 2000 and has grown, developed and evolved to be a key player in the research, knowledge exchange and enterprise space within the University, the city of Bristol and the UK. RED is also recognised both within the University and across the sector as a high performing Division.

The purpose of RED is simple: to help keep the University at the forefront of research excellence, to encourage a positive culture of research integrity, to support improved impact of research outcomes, and to foster an enterprise culture that is embraced by those who work at the University.

Working very closely with the PVC (Research), the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership to a high-performing 120-strong division. Key priorities include promoting greater interaction with industry, cultivating effective external partnerships, and driving the university’s performance around the Industrial Strategy.

The successful candidate will have a good sense of the national and international scene, and will be expected to unite a high-calibre team behind a shared vision, setting clear performance standards to deliver growth and sustainability. The Director of RED is a member of the University's senior management team and will also be expected to contribute to the strategic direction-setting of the organisation.

Candidates must bring senior leadership experience in a research management role, knowledge of research and enterprise development, an understanding of the corporate world, a strong sense of customer service, and demonstrable experience of industry engagement. They will probably – but not necessarily – have experience in the research-intensive Higher Education sector. Strong candidates will demonstrate both the requisite leadership skills to inspire and enthuse a team of highly capable, skilled professionals, and the ability to command respect at a senior level of key industry stakeholders.

They will also be skilled at uniting a team behind a shared vision. The ability to build relationships with industry partners and funders will be critical, as will the ability to bring commercial knowledge and acumen to bear in identifying and leading customer and market orientated income generation opportunities related to research, knowledge transfer and enterprise.

This is a critical role, and a huge opportunity for an ambitious and driven individual to help the University deliver on a bold research and enterprise strategy.

Closing date for applications is Sunday 24th June 2018.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
