The School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

The School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is one of the largest and most prestigious in Australia, with 2500 student enrolments, 80 academic staff, 25 professional staff, and total annual budget of over $22 million including external research grants. About the role

We are seeking an exceptional Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor in the area of space engineering. UNSW is strategically positioned to make a substantial contribution to the newly formed Australia Space Agency and the Australian space industry through education, research and policy advice. Notably:

  • UNSW Sydney has an established and popular Aerospace Engineering program with 350+ students currently enrolled;
  • UNSW Sydney and UNSW Canberra share three postgraduate Space Engineering programs;
  • ACSER, with input from the School staff and students, flew the first Australian-built satellites in 15 years;
  • UNSW has a rich recent history of space entrepreneurship: DeltaV, T Minus 10 Ltd, JAR Aerospace, CubeRider, High Earth Orbit Robotics, and more.
  • UNSW Sydney and Canberra are collaborating with Australia Department of Defence and Defence industries on hypersonic vehicle and propulsion research.

With the recent formation of the Australian Space Agency, Australia is positioning itself as a leader in space technology and engineering. Australia, both geographically and technologically, is ideally positioned to engage with the $420B global space industry. This sector has grown at over 10% annually for two decades and continues to accelerate.

The appointment would be:

  • at level B ($103K - $121K), at level C ($125K - $143K), or at level D (149K - $164K) (plus 17% superannuation and leave loading) per annum, commensurate with academic qualifications and experience,
  • full time,
  • to a Convertible Tenure Track Employment Contract for an initial fixed term period of 5 years, with conversion to continuing appointment based on satisfactory performance and there being sufficient productive work available.

The Faculty reserves the right to offer an appointment on a continuing basis or to directly appoint to advertised positions.

About you

We are looking for an exceptional candidate to conduct high impact research, deliver outstanding teaching and student experience and build industry engagement in the field of advanced manufacturing of biomedical devices and scaffolds. Applicants with industry experience are especially welcome.

As the successful candidate, you will have:

  • A PhD in mechanical engineering or a related area;
  • A demonstrated record of excellence in research with international impact;
  • A commitment to delivering high quality and innovative teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels; and,
  • The ability to actively engage with industry and the community.
