Job Description

The Wheelock College of Education and Human Development at Boston University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer or Instructor in Elementary Science Education. We are seeking a faculty member who shares Wheelock College of Education and Human Development’s commitment to both the preparation of educators and the advancement of research and scholarship in science education.

We seek a candidate with experience and demonstrated expertise in elementary science education. We are particularly interested in applications from candidates who demonstrate commitment to preparing teachers and teacher candidates to work with K-6 students who are traditionally underrepresented in the STEM fields and to explicitly addressing race, language, gender, and economic diversity in their teaching. Furthermore, we seek candidates who are well versed in the Next Generation Science Standards and the research base for their implementation, as well as candidates with experience partnering with teachers and instructional leaders.


  • Teach elementary science education methods courses to undergraduate and graduate students
  • Assist with placement and supervision of pre-service science teachers
  • Provide academic advising to students, including those seeking licensure for teaching
  • Build positive relationships with local schools, school districts, Massachusetts Department of Education, and professional organizations in the service of science teacher preparation and professional development

This two-year position begins September 1, 2018. Applicants from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.  Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Required Skills

  • Earned doctorate (Lecturer) or masters’ degree (Instructor) in science education, core disciplinary science, or a related field
  • At least three years of public school teaching at the elementary school level
  • Demonstrated competence teaching elementary school science and/or undergraduate degree in a core disciplinary science
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills

Preference will be given to applicants with prior college or university teaching experience and prior elementary teaching experience in high need districts.
