Senior Lecturer – BA (Hons) Fashion Design
Salary: £37,706 - £41,212 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract: Permanent

Leeds Arts University is the only specialist arts university in the North of England. We have contributed significantly to the development of arts education for over 170 years, and have developed a national and international reputation based on the achievements of our students and staff. Leeds Arts University has been formally recognised as the new title for Leeds College of Art, after being granted full university status by the Privy Council.

The BA (Hons) Fashion Design is a new, three-year, full time course in the University’s portfolio, commencing September 2018. This course has evolved from a pathway of the BA (Hons) Fashion that has been established for seventeen years, and is a course that embraces the diversity of the 21st century fashion practice through the exploration of evolving theories and practices that underpin fashion design, from concept to realisation. The BA (Hons) Fashion Design focuses on the development of the practice-based skills, contextual knowledge, professional attitudes and intellectual abilities which are necessary to succeed as a professional fashion practitioner.

Throughout the course, we teach students how to be inspired fashion thinkers, and to realise their womenswear, menswear or gender-fluid/neutral concepts through traditional, manual, block-based pattern cutting, including tailoring.

Creative pattern cutting inspires our ‘design through making’ ethos, and is often applied to sustainable methods, such as zero-waste. Digital technologies in pattern cutting are an emergent feature of the course, and, as such, this is an exciting opportunity for an inspirational pattern cutter to join our team.

The main focus on the role will be to lead, develop, deliver, support and assess practice based fashion design modules, in the context of pattern cutting and garment production across all levels of the course.

You will also need the skills or connections to build links with external employers, events and opportunities for exhibiting student work. Working individually and as a member of a team, you will be expected to deliver teaching within a variety of settings including lectures, seminars, studio and workshops, peer reviews and individual tutorials.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate extensive specialist pattern cutting and garment production skills, and support critical thinking and reflective practice. You will also be expected to engage with the University’s research agenda.

Full details of the essential and desirable criteria for this role can be found in the job description.
