The Academic Manager is accountable for managing the delivery of VU Bachelor and Master degree courses at VU Sydney (see link below), in close collaboration with the Campus Director and Principal, Campus Manager and Course Coordinators, through:

  • Recommending employment and support of academic teaching and coordination staff, following approval by VU Melbourne
  • Oversight of academic resource provision- VU Collaborate, VU Library, laboratories, other resources
  • Management of all academic aspects of delivery
  • Oversight of student support and engagement services, including supporting students identified to be at risk
  • Close liaison with VU Melbourne Director of Learning & Teaching, Partnerships and Innovation for delivery of academic quality assurance activities
  • Close liaison with VU academic staff, Unit Coordinators, VU Sydney Course Coordinators and others related to implementation of academic assessment and moderation requirements
  • Participation in sound and compliant decision making related to RPL, pathways, credit transfer
  • Participation in the VU Sydney Senior Leadership Team
  • Provision of proactive academic advice



Academic Management and Student Support

Academic Leadership:

  • Lead and foster excellence in scholarship, teaching and policy implementation for VU Sydney academic staff and courses
  • Implementation of policies, procedures and activities, to ensure equivalency of course delivery at VU Sydney
  • Provide academic leadership and support for VU Sydney Course Coordinators and academic teaching staff
  • Active participation in a wide range of academic quality assurance monitoring and improvement activities, including implementation of SEU and SET instruments at Sydney, and Annual and Triennial Academic Quality Assurance Review activities and improvement plans
  • Provide proactive and sound academic advice to the Campus Director and Principal, and work collaboratively with VU Melbourne staff in all matters related to academic quality
  • Motivate, guide and monitor academic staff development in the implementation of operational and strategic management plans
  • Report to the Senior Management Team, and other committees, on the delivery of VU courses

Student Services and Support:

  • Oversee library, lab, student support, student monitoring, ASPB plans, and other associated services at VU Sydney
  • Oversee academic services and intervention to support at risk students
  • Support Course Coordinators and Student Support staff to provide high quality and effective services
  • Monitor, review and improve student support services
  • Liaise closely with VU Melbourne staff to ensure student support, progress, and discipline is equivalent with VU Melbourne and complies with policy

Course Delivery:

  • Manage and coordinate an effective timetabling process
  • Manage an effective and efficient

Course Delivery:

  • Manage an effective academic timetable and academic calendar system
  • Support Course Coordinators to ensure a high quality, balanced, and effective academic delivery team, with effective knowledge transfer processes
  • Liaise closely with the Director of Learning and Teaching, Partnerships & Innovation, VU Sydney Site Coordinators, Course Coordinators, Unit Coordinators, in the design, monitoring and improvement of academic delivery
  • Oversee the implementation at VU Sydney of key academic operations including: secure and timely results, student progress requirements, secure examination process, plagiarism and breach processes, moderation processes, student counselling and support, and associated operations

Planning and Liaison:

  • Participate in the development of operational academic planning processes to ensure high quality course delivery
  • Undertake planning tasks to ensure online and physical resources and infrastructure for course delivery are in place
  • Work closely with the VU Sydney Campus Director and Student Administration Staff in formal and informal ways to ensure the close coordination of student administration services
  • Work closely with VU Sydney recruitment and admissions staff to support the attraction of high quality students throughadvice on academic entry requirements, pathways, RPL, and related areas
  • Assist the Campus Director and Principal and Campus Manager in overall strategic and operational planning

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

  • PhD or Master degree
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Higher Education
  • Demonstrated outstanding academic leadership skills preferably in Higher Education
  • Demonstrated outstanding academic management skills
  • Higher level organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated track record of developing, managing and supporting a team of experienced staff within an education environment
  • Sound knowledge of, and experience in, delivering equivalency in academic operations, and implementing policy and procedures related to same
  • Demonstrated experience in assuring a high quality of academic programs through management and coordination of academic quality assurance activities
  • Demonstrable experience in efficient budget management and resource and workforce planning
