The University of Greenwich is seeking a talented, enthusiastic and committed individual to lead and manage the University Choir, following Nicholas Jenkins’ appointment as Glyndebourne Chorus Master.
The University of Greenwich Choir is a non-auditioning, community choir open to all staff and students of the University of Greenwich, as well as alumni and friends. The average membership of the Choir in 2018 is currently around 55-60 singers, with membership consistently on the increase. The choir performs a very wide range of music, from Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man to Skyfall (Adele) . Recent performances have included Mozart Great Mass in C minor, Janacek Our Father, Elgar The Snow and pop songs e.g. Happy, and songs from musicals and films. The choir is keen to develop and grow and the Choir Director will need to engage with Choir members to gain feedback, ideas and guide them with knowledge of the wider music world to ensure the Choir is relevant and modern.
The role also involves administering the David Fussey Choral Exhibition scheme. The scheme is open to any new or existing student at the University of Greenwich who becomes a member of the University of Greenwich Choir, subject to a vocal audition, and involves a cash bursary being awarded to the student in return for participation and help in running the choir see https://www.gre.ac.uk/about-us/music/choir/choral_exhibition
Rehearsals take place on Mondays in term time from 6.30-8.30pm.
The role will commence in August 2018 and comes with a £6,500 annual fee. The contract is for one year, which may be renewed, and is based on the need for approximately 32 sessions with 4 performances. These are in October (a short informal concert), early December (University Carol Services in the Old Royal Naval College Chapel on December 4th 2018), March (Classical with orchestra.) and May (a mixture of pop, film, musicals, shows and light classical). Further sessions may be discussed with the successful candidate if they feel they are warranted.
