The Welding Engineering and Laser Processing Centre (WELPC) has been at the forefront of welding and Wire + Arc Additive Manufacture (WAAM) for over fifty years pioneering new techniques and material applications. We have a large research activity (≈£1.2 million per annum) which is funded from both government and industrial sources. To deliver this research, it is essential that the centre has high quality and organised technical support.

To this end, we are now seeking to recruit a Lab and facilities manager to the centre to both organise and provide this support and ensure that the centre maintains our world leading positions in WAAM and welding. This role will be an excellent opportunity for someone with technical skills who wishes to develop managerial skills.

The successful candidate will line manage the technical staff in the centre, assist researchers in running their experiments and equipment to deliver specific projects. The post holder will also take on the role of the Nominated Safety Manager for the centre which will involve ensuring that the safety paperwork is up to date, being the centre’s representative during audits and ensuring that the researchers and students within the centre work in a safe manner.

In addition to this, you will also play a crucial role in overseeing building maintenance and upgrades. This aspect of the role will involve liaising with facilities to ensure that the building remains safe and in good condition. In addition, where the arrangement of the building and/or manufacturing cells within the lab are changed the lab manager will oversee the upgrade and provide practical assistance where necessary.

The successful candidate will have a HND or higher qualification in a relevant scientific or engineering subject or equivalent experience. You will also have formal welder training and significant practical experience of welding within industry or a similar environment. Experience of robot/CNC control systems and previous line management experience is desirable, but not essential. The WELPC is OHSAS 18001 certified and you should have understanding of, and willingness to follow safe working practices for yourself and others. You will be a motivated person who has the ability to work as part of a diverse multi-national team and on their own initiative.
