The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see www.oist.jp) is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding (OIST campus video tour). There are no academic departments, which facilitates multidisciplinary research. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration. English is the official language of the University, and the university research community is fully international, with more than 50 countries represented. OIST is rapidly gaining recognition in the worldwide academic community as a model for excellence in education and research.

Responsibilities

OIST now has almost 1,000 students, faculty and employees. OIST has recognized from the start that their overall wellbeing is a key to their success at OIST and the success of OIST as an institution. In this regard, OIST has established a number of services including Ganjuu, the Child Development Center, and the Resource Center. In addition, OIST operates several exercise/training/activity rooms and there are many informal teams or clubs that use both university facilities and off-campus facilities. As the university grows, there is a need to formalize and integrate these activities, especially activities aimed at physical wellness, into the overall university support services.

Plan, develop, coordinate, and monitor formal and informal teams or clubs that use university exercise/athletic facilities, including trainer qualifications, safety/first aid procedures, etc. through the establishment of clear and transparent policies and practices.

Manage and coordinate information about university recreation services through webpages, other electronic media, booklets and posters, etc. in close collaboration with the Communications and Public Relations division.
Manage and coordinate OIST staff or external contractors who construct or maintain University exercise/athletic facilities in close collaboration with the Building and Facilities Management Division.

Lead and coordinate OIST’s efforts to develop university-wide exercise, physical education/exercise/athletic/facilities, involving all stakeholders in and outside of OIST

Work closely with the directors of Ganjuu, the Child Development Center and the Resource Center to ensure all support and wellbeing services are integrated into the overall OIST development plan
Serve as a liaison between the recreation services and the health and safety services at OIST.

Qualifications

  • Professional training at the Bachelors level in physiology (physical education or sports focus)
  • Professional training in education and teaching such as Bachelors or Masters in Teaching or equivalent
  • Experience in managing recreation services, including physical wellness programs at the college level
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Excellent ability to interact with people at all levels

Term & Working Hours

Term: Full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 3-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed. Working hours: 9:00-17:30 (Discretionary)

Compensation & Benefits

  • Compensation in accordance with the OIST Employee Compensation Regulations

Annual salary:

  • Commensurate with experience (Job class: Manager, A5)
