Performance Analysis Work Placement

As part of an ongoing relationship with the University of Chichester, Insight Analysis are offering a number of placement opportunities to support senior analysts, coaches, teams and the wider professional rugby department within the RFU. These placement opportunities will provide the successful applicants with a rare opportunity to develop their technical and non-technical skills in an elite applied setting (circa 28 hours per week from September to May), whilst completing their MSc on a Full-Time basis. In addition, formal and informal CPD opportunities will be provided to suitable candidates at regular stages throughout the season, designed to align and assist with course assignments and requirements.

Each placement opportunity will be split into two main components for the duration of the season to maximize learning in key applied areas.

Approximately 50% of the placement (circa 14 hours per week) will be spent working under our team of Senior Analysts to assist in the delivery of a variety of analysis processes and services to the following England Teams and Professional Rugby Departments;

  • England Men's Senior Team
  • England Men's Pathway
  • Professional Game Match Officials Team (with ad-hoc support of Men's and Women's 7s and Women's XVs)
  • Specific areas of work to support the above teams may include:
  • Bespoke analysis on players, matches or events pertinent to England Team requirements
  • Filming and editing of meetings to enhance feedback
  • Supported delivery of meetings to coaching or match official groups
  • Filming of training sessions and or matches as required or directed by senior analysts
  • Administrative tasks to assist in data analysis
  • General analysis support tasks as deemed suitable by Senior Analysts

2. The second part of the role will see the successful applicant assigned to a GK IPA Championship team where they will work as part of a dedicated team of support analysts, with a responsibility to film and analyse their assigned team's matches on a weekly basis for the duration of the season.

Key components of this role include:

  • Capturing of two views at every home match of your allocated GK IPA Championship team, for both Championship and British and Irish Cup Fixtures
  • Providing both teams with a live feed to allow them to perform in-match analysis
  • Providing both teams with a copy of both angles at the completion of the match
  • Uploading footage to a secure web platform post match
  • Producing team and individual analysis each week using Sportscode
  • Completing thorough reliability and accuracy checks on analysis
  • Uploading data to secure platform

It is anticipated that the above responsibility will account for approximately 10-15 hours per week.

In order to maximize the exposure and development of the successful candidates it is expected that, when not completing field based tasks, they will work out of either the Insight office in Bath, or hot desk at one of the RFU's offices in/around Twickenham. Proximity to these two areas is therefore a pre-requisite for appointment.

  • A relevant undergraduate degree (Minimum 2:1)
  • Experience of providing analysis support to a team or individual and/or experience of coaching, playing or refereeing Rugby.
  • Knowledge of Rugby Union, it's rules and current players
  • Trustworthy, with ability to work autonomously
  • Very good communication skills
  • Excel, Word and PowerPoint skills and experience
  • Reliable and enthusiastic with the ability to work well under pressure
  • Outstanding work ethic and ability to work and communicate as part of a team.
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Good understanding of SportsCode software and Apple based products.
  • Available to work unsociable hours including weekends and Bank Holidays

Personal circumstances must allow the candidate to work extended hours, evenings and weekends for the duration of the placement as well as attending all lectures and university commitments. A full commitment for the duration of the placement is a pre-requisite for these placements.
