As part of the Tenure Track Programme, the Institute of Software and Multimedia Technology at the Faculty of Computer Science invites applications for the

Junior Professorship (W1) in the Design of Immersive Media 
(W2 with Tenure Track)

initially limited to a four-year contract as a temporary public official, to be filled at the earliest possible date. If the interim evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended to a total of six years. In the fifth year, a tenure evaluation will be carried out by a faculty-wide and school-wide commission. Following a positive evaluation, a permanent Chair (W2) of the Design of Immersive Media will be granted without a renewed call for applications.

Evaluation criteria mutually agreed upon when the position is accepted will form the basis of the evaluation procedures. Essential elements of the evaluations will be scientific success in the form of national and international publications, visibility through design in the form of interactive installations, exhibition participations and awards, the development of innovative teaching concepts and materials, the successful counselling of students and doctoral candidates, the successful acquisition of third-party funds, as well as positively evaluated teaching performance. 

During the temporary Junior Professorship, the applicant must prove that they are capable of fulfilling the research and teaching requirements in the subject area Design of Immersive Media. We are looking for a media designer with an expertise in several of the following research focuses and subject areas: 

  • Methodology of digital design 
  • Design of virtual information spaces and of complex, immersive media
  • Design of applications in the field of virtual, augmented or mixed reality
  • Interactions in virtual surroundings and AR/VR/MR scenarios
  • Computational Aesthetics 
  • Media design in smart, physical spaces
  • Immersive Visual Analytics
  • Immersive Storytelling or Immersive Gaming

Very good experiences and recognised work in science and design in several of these areas, a high quality publication activity, teaching experience in the specified field research, as well as experience with the successful acquisition of third-party funds and in project management are expected from the applicant.

In addition to research activities and cooperations on a national and international level, we would like to see close professional cooperation within the Faculty of Computer Science, with other university institutions and with partner institutions under the aegis of DRESDEN-concept. The applicant is also expected to make creative contributions to the Living Lab "Immersive Understanding" of the Lehmann Centre and to be willing to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration, among others, with regional and supraregional institutions from the areas of culture and arts. Active participation in the academic self-administration and academic committees of the Faculty of Computer Science is required. Teaching tasks in German and English include contributions to basic training in the degree programme Media Informatics and in other degree programmes, in particular at the Faculty of Computer Science.

Applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 63 of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (Higher Education Act of the Free State of Saxony – SächsHSFG).
