initially limited to a six-year contract as a temporary public official, to be filled at the earliest possible date. In being appointed to the chair, evaluation criteria will be mutually agreed upon, which will be evaluated by a faculty-wide and school-wide commission at the latest in the fifth year of the chair. Following a positive evaluation, a permanent Chair (W2) of American Studies with a focus on Diversity Studies will be granted without a renewed selection process.

Essential elements of the evaluation will be scientific success in the form of the publication of a further postdoctoral monograph, regular peer-reviewed publications in journals and anthologies, the successful application for at least one research-related third-party funding project, the acquisition of third-party funds, the organisation of at least one international conference, active participation in didactic measures for higher education, involvement in the field of knowledge transfer as well as positively evaluated teaching performance in English at the level of a W2 chair.

During the temporary chair, the applicants must prove that they are capable of fulfilling the research and teaching requirements in the field of American Studies with a focus on Cultural Studies and with a historical perspective. It is also expected that the candidate has a focus in a minimum of one area of American Studies – Diversity Studies (e.g. Race and Ethnicity Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Disability Studies). It is desired that the candidate has the ability to connect with social, historical or media science research contexts. Experience in international work contexts and in the successful acquisition of third-party funds is preferred.

In addition to cooperation with other Chairs at the Institute of English and American Studies, the applicant is expected to be involved in interdisciplinary and cross-faculty research, in particular through input for existing teaching and research alliances at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (e.g. at the Centre for Integration Studies) and through active participation in establishing new research collaborations in the Research Priority Area "Culture and Societal Change". One of the main tasks in teaching is to work in the English-American degree programmes, including teaching English to Education students. Involvement in the development of new courses and interdisciplinary teaching is welcomed. Active participation in academic self-administration and in the academic committees of the faculty is required.

Applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 58 of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (Higher Education Act of the Free State of Saxony – SächsHSFG). In addition, a relevant doctorate of outstanding quality in American Studies, relevant research experience beyond the doctorate, high-quality publications as well as pedagogical aptitude and teaching experience in American Studies must be proven in order to be recruited.
