initially limited to a six-year contract as a temporary public official, to be filled at the earliest possible date. As part of the appointment to the chair, evaluation criteria are mutually agreed upon, and will be evaluated by a faculty-wide and school-wide commission at the latest in the fifth year of the chair. Following a positive evaluation, a permanent Chair (W2) of Visual Culture in the Global Context will be granted without a renewed selection process.

Essential elements of the evaluations will be the scientific success in the form of qualified publications that have been assessed in conformity with international standards, the successful acquisition of third-party funds, documented commitment in formats of knowledge transfer, substantial contributions to the design of the planned Master’s degree programme “Digital Humanities”, as well as positively evaluated teaching performance in German and English on the level of a W2 chair.

As one of eleven Universities of Excellence, TU Dresden offers ideal prerequisites for research and teaching, and provides, particularly with DRESDEN-concept, a highly attractive and transdisciplinary science network with excellent institutions in the areas of research and culture. Together with the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science and the Institute of Art and Music, TU Dresden takes an integrated approach to strengthen the strategic Research Priority Area “Culture and Societal Change” through excellent research and attractive teaching offers geared towards promising topics and methods.

During the temporary chair, the applicant must prove that she or he is capable of widely representing the subject area of Art History with commitment in research and teaching. Visual Culture in the Global Context shall have a focus on the arts and creative media in the modern age and the present. In addition, broad competence in Digital Humanities is required. The applicant is expected to draw on the historical and current experiences of the Dresden collection activity and art history with regard to a global view of the disciplinary subject area, and should be able to combine both. In teaching, the chair is primarily integrated into the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes of Art History with its extensive interdisciplinary teaching assignments. The development of and participation in international collaborations, as well as the active involvement in the academic self-administration and academic committees of the faculty is expected as is the willingness and ability to conduct classes in English.

We are looking for a scientist with broad and profound knowledge, if possible, on the entire area of art history, from late antiquity to the present, coupled with the willingness to contribute to the dynamic and systematic development of the subject in research and teaching. Applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 58 of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (Higher Education Act of the Free State of Saxony – SächsHSFG).
