Associate Professor and Head of Department – Civil Engineering, Surveying and Construction Management

Lead our team through an interesting and important change programme

The role

This is an exciting opportunity to lead this newly-merged department through a period of transition. Overseeing a broad array of changes, you will manage this process seamlessly, using your leadership skills and innovative ideas to handle complex challenges and find high-performing solutions. As a directional figurehead, you will develop our teaching, learning and research capabilities, using your stakeholder management capabilities to direct a team of skilled academic staff at all levels. Guiding them through this dynamic transformation, you will ensure we are providing a consistently high quality of education to our students, including furthering the research potential within the department.  You will seek out opportunities for enterprise and the development of intellectual property and you will ensure your colleagues are working together to achieve our desired standards.

Your profile

We are proud to be supporting the future innovators of the Civil Engineering, Surveying and Construction Management sectors. It is therefore of vital importance that our staff nurture this talent, which is why we need you. With hands-on professional expertise in one of these fields or a postgraduate or research qualification, you will have experience of leading a team of academics within a Higher Education establishment. You will also have the relevant level of UKPSF recognition or be willing to obtain this. A natural leader, you will inspire our academics to continue working collaboratively, and you will be able to identify and establish opportunities for enterprise. Committed to maintaining your ongoing professional development, you will gain national recognition through the publication of your work and you will have the natural gravitas to act as a spokesperson for the department.

The role of Head of Department will be initially for a period of 4 years; this may be renewed for a longer period. If not extended a 6 month sabbatical will be available after which you would return to the substantive academic role of Associate Professor, however, if this is renewed the sabbatical may be available at the end of any subsequent term(s).

The responsibilities attract an annual additional allowance of £3,000 per annum. This allowance would cease when the additional responsibilities are no longer allocated.

The Faculty

Inspire Britain’s future top scientists and engineers to fly high via the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing.

The Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing covers such diverse subjects as: games technology; motorsport engineering; forensic science; aircraft maintenance, environmental hazards and disaster management; cybersecurity; civil engineering, surveying and construction, sports science, nutrition; digital media technology; aerospace engineering, biomedical science and pharmacy.

Many of our lecturers are expert practitioners working at the forefront of their fields and most are also actively engaged in research bringing up-to-the-minute knowledge to their teaching. The Faculty boasts state-of-the art facilities including specialist laboratories, a public outreach centre, concrete testing facilities, a games laboratory; flight simulators and a Learjet – providing future scientists and engineers with real-life environments for learning practical skills.

Applicants will be required to demonstrate that they meet the Kingston University standards in learning and teaching, and research.  By the end of the probation period, you must have achieved the relevant level of UKPSF recognition (if this has not already been obtained).  For those experienced in teaching, this will be through our Kingston Academic Practice Standards Framework.
