Assistant Professor in Product Design (two posts) (Ref. 18043008)
The School of Design, as a leading and transdisciplinary design school, is at the forefront of nurturing responsible, open-minded, creative talents and active learners; contributing to innovation in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland while maintaining a global perspective. As one of the top design schools in the world, its highly diverse design expertise and academic programmes include: Advertising Design, Communication Design, Design Strategies, Digital and Interactive Media Design, Environment and Interior Design, Interaction Design, International Design and Business Management, Product Design, Urban Environments Design, and Social Design. Its research and consultancy work are of an applied nature relevant to industrial, commercial and community needs. The appointees will be required to:
(a) contribute to programme/course planning and teaching at all levels;
(b) engage actively in research and scholarly activities serving the regional and international industries with significance and relevance to the discipline and profession;
(c) act as student advisor and supervisor to groups as well as individual students;
(d) undertake administrative duties in relation to academic and departmental affairs; and
(e) perform any other duties as assigned by the Dean of School or his delegates.
Applicants should have:
(a) a relevant PhD degree or a relevant master’s degree plus at least five years of industry experience in designing and commercializing consumer products;
(b) demonstrated sufficient capacity in research and scholarly activities, and/or attracting funding for programmes, research or industry projects;
(c) an excellent command of English;
(d) the qualities of creativity, aesthetic/design sense, initiative and leadership; and
(e) a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research and professional service.
For Post 1, applicants should also have (a) at least seven years of teaching experience, and capability in academic programme planning, management and curriculum development; (b) expertise in design thinking, materials and fabrication processes, and form and structure design; (c) demonstrated competence and experience in teaching in at least THREE of the following subject areas with preferred priority: (i) product aesthetics and semantics; (ii) design making/maker; (iii) entrepreneurship; (iv) user-centered design; or (v) multidisciplinary design/innovation; and (d) extensive knowledge and awareness of the latest trend and development of his/her areas of expertise mentioned in (c) above.
For Post 2, applicants should also have (a) sufficient experience and practice in the areas of digital design technologies and design methodologies with at least two years of teaching experience in the relevant areas; (b) demonstrated competence and experience in teaching in at least THREE of the following subject areas with preferred priority: (i) UX and UI design; (ii) Internet-of-Things; (iii) design research; (iv) product-service system design; or (v) sustainable product design/circular design; and (c) extensive knowledge and awareness of the latest trend and development of his/her areas of expertise mentioned in (b) above.
Applicants should submit (a) a letter of application together with completed application form; (b) curriculum vitae; (c) statement of research and statement of teaching philosophy; (d) five key publications; (e) seven to ten samples of personal work, with a brief description of the work and involvement; and (f) samples of student work.
Remuneration and Conditions of Service
A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointments will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
