Assistant Professor in Communication Design (Ref. 18043007)

The School of Design, as a leading and transdisciplinary design school, is at the forefront of nurturing responsible, open-minded, creative talents and active learners; contributing to innovation in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland while maintaining a global perspective.  As one of the top design schools in the world, its highly diverse design expertise and academic programmes include: Advertising Design, Communication Design, Design Strategies, Digital and Interactive Media Design, Environment and Interior Design, Interaction Design, International Design and Business Management, Product Design, Urban Environments Design, and Social Design. The Communication Design discipline at the School takes a human-centered approach in expanding the scope of traditional ‘graphic design’.  Students develop their design knowledge and imagination, and learn how to strategize and shape communication experiences using a variety of media, with emphasis on creating identities, informational artifacts and systems, as well as user experiences.

The School of Design is looking for a candidate who is willing to work in the environment that builds on the School’s legacy of human-centered design, as well as with a strong background in graphic/communication design. 

More specifically, the School is looking for a candidate who can demonstrate teaching and research proficiency in at least two of the following areas: (a) book and publication design; (b) graphic design and poster design; (c) typography; and (d) visual idea development and conceptualization process.

Duties 

The appointee will be required to: 

(a)    combine exceptional form-giving skills with knowledge of design theory, methods and research techniques;

(b)    teach at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels in the Communication Design discipline;

(c)    act as student advisor and supervisor to groups as well as individual students;

(d)    work with the industry and initiate funded research projects; 

(e)    demonstrate research expertise and engage in scholarly activities to advance knowledge of the field of Communication Design; 

(f)    provide leadership in all aspects of academic activities, including research, teaching and service in the discipline; and

(g)    perform any other duties as assigned by the Dean of School or his delegates.

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

(a)    a PhD degree in a specialized area of Communication Design or a related discipline plus at least six years of relevant professional and academic experience; 

(b)    extensive knowledge of graphic design and expertise in using graphic design techniques in media design; 

(c)    experience in communication design research and research methodologies;

(d)    an excellent record of professional and scholarly achievements, including a record of academic publications and good reputation in the industry;

(e)    experience in human-centered approach to communication design, with a high level of contextual awareness and a vision for the future development of the profession; and

(f)    a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research and professional service.

Applicants with significant knowledge of typography and/or publication design are strongly preferred.

Applicant should submit (a) a letter of application together with completed application form; (b) curriculum vitae; (c) statement of research and statement of teaching philosophy; (d) ten to fifteen samples of personal work (including academic publications), with a brief description of the work and involvement; and (e) samples of student work.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service
