Director, Doctor of Education Leadership Program

Position Description

The Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) invites applications for the position of Director of the Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) Program. The Director will lead this unique and innovative program designed to offer world-class training for system-level leadership in education. The Director will also serve as a member of the Faculty of the Whole at HGSE, at the rank of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Professor of Practice.

The Ed.L.D. is a three-year, full-time, practice-based program designed to develop transformative leaders in American preK-12 education. Students graduate with deep knowledge of learning and development, a firm grasp of public policy issues, organizational management skills, and an understanding of self and others. The program enrolls annually a cohort of 25 students, from diverse professional backgrounds — including entrepreneurs, nonprofit directors, principals, teachers, and policymakers— to prepare them for system-level leadership positions in school systems, national nonprofits and philanthropies, state and federal departments of education, and mission-driven for-profits. All students receive a full-tuition funding package plus stipends, work opportunities, and a paid third-year residency at a partner organization.

Following on the program’s successful first decade, the Director will oversee and continue to refine the vision for the program and its implementation. With support from an administrative team and faculty involved in teaching and program implementation, the Director’s responsibilities fall into five main categories: continued improvement and enactment of a core curriculum, including support and development of the third-year residency; program strategy refinement and execution; student recruitment and admissions; current student coaching, advising, and advocacy; and career support for alumni. The Director will also teach in the core curriculum, serve on school-wide committees as a representative of the program, and chair program-specific committees such as the Ed.L.D. Steering Committee and the Ed.L.D. Admissions Committee. This position involves year-round responsibilities, including during the summer.

Basic Qualifications 

We seek a dynamic individual who is attracted to the prospect of leading and continuing to develop an innovative program. Applicants should be experienced and accomplished system-level educational leaders, especially in high-need contexts, with a demonstrated commitment to excellence and equity. The position requires significant leadership of faculty, students, and the HGSE community as well as effective management, communication and interpersonal skills. Strong candidates will hold a doctorate and have a track record of success working across the education sector to bring about meaningful change and lasting impacts, whether in school systems, organizations that support the development of educational leaders and/or educational reform, or as faculty in university-based, field-facing educational leadership programs.
