Land Rehabilitation and Maintenance Support/Equipment Operator
Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. A one-year Field Support Assistant (Technical/Support I) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position is located at Camp Roberts, California. This position will assist the Land Rehabilitation and Maintenance (LRAM) component of the Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) program to sustain realistic training land conditions and the support of mission requirements for units at the installation.
Camp Roberts, at 42,784 acres, is the largest training area under the control of the California Army National Guard. The mission at Camp Roberts is to facilitate the training, mobilization and security of the National Guard, Army Reserve and Active Component units in support of federal, state and community missions. Camp Roberts is located in Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties on Hwy 101, approximately 9 miles north of Paso Robles. Cities near Camp Roberts have an abundance of recreational opportunities, picturesque landscapes, and attractive neighborhoods.
Required Job Qualifications
The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date and a valid California driver’s license within the required residency period.
Minimum requirements include:
- A High School Diploma, General Education Development (GED), or equivalent
- A minimum of six continuous months of specialized experience in land rehabilitation, land management, and the use of equipment typically associated with land rehabilitation projects
- Experience with the use of global position systems (GPS), application of Best Management Practices (BMP) for soil conservation, and erosion control
- Ability to work under field conditions including rugged terrain, low humidity, and extreme heat as well as repeatedly lift 50-70 lbs
- Commercial Driver’s License
Preferred Job Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s Degree in an environmental field
- Experience with programs similar to LRAM in land rehabilitation
- Experience working on military installations
- Experience operating and maintaining mechanized equipment (tractors, seed drills, hydromulchers, and/or straw- mulchers, front loaders, grader, water truck, truck&trailer)
- Experience in invasive species management practices and the use of erosion control materials
- Ability to work successfully with others and independently
- Familiarity with California Central Coast vegetation or a similar vegetation

Job Duty Category Land Management Duty/Responsibility
Incumbent will support the overall training mission and the ITAM program at Camp Roberts, California, through Land Rehabilitation Management duties that include:
- Enhancing the safe use of training ranges and facilities, sustaining the overall training land condition, improving off-road safety and access to training lands and increasing the net use of training lands
- Improving operational safety and tactical mobility through the use of fuel reduction methods
- Completing site restoration to include digging, trenching, grading, seeding, watering, clearing dry/dead vegetation, etc.
- Aiding in the application of dust control measures on maneuver trails and aviation sites, and participate in site cleanup (e.g., removal of class IV materials—old culverts, concertina wire/communication wire, support poles, etc.)

Operate/Maintain Light and Heavy Equipment for Land Rehabilitation by:
- Using various pieces of equipment (e.g., hydromulcher, aeromulcher, tractor, lawn mower, and chainsaw), and complete simple equipment maintenance and repair
- Understand and perform the basic preventative maintenance on equipment to include cleaning, greasing, checking and maintaining fluid levels, track tightening, and operational safety
- Follow time schedules and understand signals to identify maintenance is necessary
