York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York and there has never been a more exciting time to join us.

Significant investment in our campus and facilities, the development of forward-thinking new partnerships and an enhanced range of contemporary courses have helped make us the fastest growing University in the U.K. over the past two years.

Now we are building on that achievement, developing a new strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world, and a more prosperous region.

We are putting inspirational learning and impactful research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset and investing in enabling this expertise to thrive.

As a Stonewall Top 100 employer and holder of the Social Enterprise Gold Mark for Responsible Business Practice, our strength lies in the supportive, inclusive network that exists within our team: renowned for our friendly, progressive environment, we will nurture your potential so that you can accomplish your ambitions.

All of this takes place at the heart of beautiful York, recently named by the Sunday Times as the best U.K. city to grow up in because of the quality of education, culture and community spirit that we form part of!

As part of our expansion we are recruiting a Lecturer in Design History and Theory. Our particular aim with this appointment is to develop and strengthen the delivery of theoretical and historical approaches in both digital and craft based design subject areas. As a result, we would encourage established practitioners who possess thorough knowledge of various design disciplines and a real appreciation for interdisciplinary practices within contemporary contextual studies to apply. This position has fantastic opportunities to develop and work within a dynamic design team across a multitude of design disciplines. Candidates must have experience of teaching design history and theory. They should also have undertaken research in design history / theory, cultural studies or a related area.

If you would like to shape the story of a 175 year old institution with a fantastic future, we would love to hear from you.

In addition to a competitive salary and the opportunity to work at our beautiful campus in the heart of York, YSJ employees enjoy access to a superb range of benefits including –

  • Generous annual leave entitlement (plus additional leave days during our Christmas closure period)
  • Pension scheme
  • Health cash plan
  • Training and development
  • Discounts at a wide range of high street brands and local companies, including shops, cinemas and gyms.

Please note that CVs will not be accepted in place of the application form.

We welcome all applicants, and particularly people from minority ethnic backgrounds as they are underrepresented within the university.

Closing date – 27th May 2018 at midnight

Provisional interview date – 20th June 2018
