Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a 100% position (2 years) as a Post Doctor at the Department of Electric Power Engineering (IEL) http://www.ntnu.edu/elkraft at Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (IE) 

Information about the Department

Currently there are 12 Professors, 7 Associate Professors and 4 Lecturers at the Department of Electric Power Engineering. In addition, there are 4 Adjunct Professors, 2 Adjunct Associate Professors, 9 Postdoctoral researchers, 3 Researchers, about 35 PhD students, and 15 technical/administrative staff. Research activities are organized under two research groups: Power Systems Group and Power Technology Group. The department has a good laboratory infrastructure for research and education, as well as a mechanical workshop, supported by a technical staff of 10 persons.

Work description

The candidate will work within the chair of current interruption and switchgear technology and in close cooperation with the partner research organization, SINTEF Energy Research. This postdoctoral position will work in a large and inter-disciplinary team investigating supercritical fluids as an alternative switching medium for current interruption purposes in power transmission and distribution networks. It entails significant knowledge and experience in current interruption in high voltage gaseous switching devices. The goal of this position is to develop appropriate physical models for simulation of dynamic processes related to the high current switching arcs in ultra-high pressure environments as well as in supercritical fluids.

Formal requirements and qualifications

A successful applicant must have a PhD in electric engineering, applied/plasma physics or in a similar field with solid background in multi-physics simulations. Experience in high voltage / high current field would be a distinct advantage. Demonstrated ability to translate deep theory into practice and ability to write well-articulated scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals is necessary. Excellent analytical and communication skills are required. The candidates must have an ability to work independently as well as in a team.

Academic results, publications, relevant specialization, work or research experience, personal qualifications and motivation will be considered by evaluation of the applicants.

Language requirements

Applicants must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:

  • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

Salary Conditions:

The Post Doctor position is in code 1352 and is remunerated at a gross NOK 490.900 per year, depending on qualifications. A deduction of 2% is made as a statutory contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
