About the opportunity
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Level A/B) to join our research team working on a project investigating optimisation of prescribed burning activities to achieve positive outcomes for water, carbon and vegetation while mitigating risk to human safety and property. This position is supported by funding from the Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre and will be based at the University of Sydney. There will be a strong requirement to interact with state-based land management agencies for adoption of research outputs. Good opportunities for collaboration with investigators based elsewhere in Australia and internationally will also be available.
In this project you will develop tools that allow land managers to assess the carbon and water potential of forested catchments at appropriate scales that, coupled with vegetation and landform information, will allow development of well-informed plans for fuel reduction burning. This will involve refinement and testing of current models of tree- and soil-water storage using field data and design of a model of soil carbon dynamics based primarily on fuel load, fire intensity and landscape variability. Inclusion of vegetation and soil mapping information gathered using remote-sensing techniques will be incorporated to allow continual development of model accuracy.
It is expected that you will participate in publication of papers in peer-reviewed journals and in preparation of reports and presentations to fulfil funding milestones. You will be required to lead fieldwork in New South Wales, the ACT and Victoria and to explore the potential to collect data from other states.

- Develop spatially explicit models to predict and test the effects of fire on fuel load, carbon storage and water potential in different vegetation types at the landscape-scale based on a range of field measurements.
- Demonstration of skills related to collection, management and analysis of field-based data and a valid Australian driver’s licence are critical.
- Independent research with limited supervision to be coupled with an ability to work as part of a team.
- Proven record of excellent written and oral skills through a well-developed record of publications and presentations.
- Evidence of management and manipulation of large data sets is essential. Good organisational skills are also essential.
- Desirable attributes for this position include the ability to assist with supervising postgraduate and honours students and to contribute to teaching in undergraduate subjects.
We are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow (Landscape Modeller) Research with:
For appointment at level A you must have completed a PhD degree in a relevant field with a strong background in spatial landscape modelling. You must provide evidence of a developing publication record and be able to demonstrate your ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
In addition to this, for appointment at Level B you must provide evidence of a strong track-record in research with a well-developed publication record and presentation of your research in national or international forums. Evidence of supervision of undergraduate or postgraduate student research or research training will be taken into account for appointment at Level B.
