Research Associate, Gustafson Laboratory
Description of Work Unit
The Flint Animal Cancer Center in the Department of Clinical Sciences is one of the premier veterinary cancer treatment centers in the world and focuses on studying animal cancers with a focus on comparative medicine.
This is a Research Associate position that is funded through annual proceeds from the Shipley Chair in Comparative Oncology to support studies on the development of cancer therapeutics in animal models of cancer. Research support will provide data to be used in scientific publications and subsequent grant applications as well as further studies on drugs and other therapeutic approaches noted to have efficacy.
Required Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an area related to the biomedical sciences (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology)
- 3 or less years experience working in the laboratory setting working with liquid chromatography
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Basic background in cancer biology
- Experience with mass spectrometry
- Experience in peptide analysis by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry
- Experience with LC/MS/MS analysis of small molecules and peptides

Job Duty Category Analytical Analysis of Drugs and Biomolecules Duty/Responsibility
Develop and implement quantitative proteomic assays and drugs using discrete peptide analysis. Duties include the identification of discrete peptides using software designed to identify unique peptide sequences that are not susceptible to modification. Development of LC/MS/MS methods to separate and quantify those peptides.

Testing novel cancer drugs and drug combination in mouse tumor models. This includes monitoring tumor growth, administering drugs and collecting blood and organ samples. Preparation of samples for drug analysis by LC/MS/MS will also be part of the responsibilities.
