For more than 50 years, CSU Online, an enterprise unit formally named the Division of Continuing Education, has been delivering online and distance programs developed at the flagship research campus in Fort Collins, Colorado. Housed in the Office of Engagement, which reports directly to the university president, CSU Online provides affordable access to a high-quality education from wherever students call home around the nation and world, on a schedule that fits their lives. CSU’s online students receive the same education, learn from the same faculty, and earn the same regionally accredited degree as students on at the Fort Collins campus. CSU Online offers more than 40 degrees, online and at a distance, as well as hundreds of credit and noncredit courses and dozens of certificate programs, digital badge programs, and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).
CSU Online is a center of innovation at the university, supporting not only the development of online and distance courses and programs but also the enhancement of campus instruction. It enjoys strong partnerships with the Office of the Provost, the Colleges, the Graduate School, the Division of Student Affairs, and key instructional groups within the university, including the Institute for Learning and Teaching and the University Distinguished Teaching Scholars. CSU Online is actively engaged in projects intended to improve teaching effectiveness and educational access and affordability across the university, including initiatives in areas such as open educational resources, open-access publishing, virtual and augmented reality, active and technology-enhanced teaching and learning, and learning analytics.
CSU Online has a staff of about 70 professionals. Key teams include Program Development and Management, Marketing and Communications, Student Success and Engagement, Finance, Learning Technologies, and Research and Analytics. CSU Online collaborates closely with the colleges, departments, and divisions across the university, with other universities in the CSU System, and with government, business, non-profit organizations as well as other educational institutions in the Rocky Mountain region. Colorado State University Online (Department of Continuing Education) is seeking an instructional designer to build high-quality online courses that improve student learning and follow best practice guidelines. This full-time position will involve:
- Working with faculty and staff to design and develop course curricula and instructional materials;
- Supporting the professional development of faculty, adjuncts, subject matter experts, and graduate teaching assistants through consultation and training;
The successful candidate will possess an in-depth and current understanding of instructional issues related to teaching and learning in blended and online courses, as well as experience using a wide range of hardware and software tools to develop instructional materials.
The Instructional Designer will report to the Director of Research & Analytics at CSU Online and will join a team that works collaboratively to support the teaching and learning mission of the University.
Required Job Qualifications
- Either (1) a Master’s degree in instructional design, curriculum and instruction, educational technology, instructional systems, education, or a closely related field or (2) a Bachelor’s degree in any field and at least five years of work experience in the field of course development by the time of hire.
- Experience developing instructional materials for learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard, Sakai, Moodle, and/or Canvas).
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong understanding of instructional design models and principles, educational theory, and instructional technology.
- Familiarity with processes relevant to the development of course curricula and instructional materials for credit and non-credit courses (digital badges, MOOCs).
- Experience using graphics editing software (e.g., PhotoShop), presentation software (e.g., PowerPoint), synchronous conferencing tools, and other learning technologies.
- Experience with video recording techniques and the use of hardware (digital cameras and sound-recording equipment) and software tools (e.g., Adobe Premiere and Encoder, Camtasia).
- Experience training others, especially faculty, to use online learning technologies.
- Experience coding HTML and CSS.
- Experience developing accessible Web-based materials.
- Familiarity with FERPA related to online learning technologies.
- Demonstrated understanding of the higher education environment and experience working successfully with university faculty.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative context.
- Excellent time management skills.

Job Duty Category Course Development Duty/Responsibility
- Work collaboratively with instructors (including faculty, professional staff, and graduate teaching assistants) to design blended and fully online courses (credit, non-credit, and digital badging); to develop print and digital course materials; to ensure the timely development of accessible instructional materials; and to design and apply assessment procedures and instruments.
- Provide one-on-one and group training to faculty and graduate students for using the Canvas learning management system, as well as other teaching technologies.

- Provide follow-up assistance and support to instructors as they incorporate new curricula and materials into their courses.

- Coordinate the scheduling and production (shooting and editing) of instructional video for all courses under development by the Drake Hall course development team; track video-production statistics; coordinate and maintain video-production equipment (e.g., cameras and microphones); advise the Drake Hall Course Development team on current compliance issue regarding video accessibility, as well as the best practices and processes for producing excellent instructional videos.
