Description of Work Unit
The School of Music, Theatre and Dance (SMTD) has 36 tenured and tenure-track faculty as well as 40 adjunct faculty.
The University Center for the Arts is a nationally recognized state-of the art 350,000 square foot facility, that includes a 550-seat concert hall, a 275-seat organ and chamber music recital hall, a 320-seat thrust theatre, a 100-seat black box theatre, a 200-seat dance theatre, dedicated rehearsal, production and research spaces, along with classrooms, labs and practice rooms. The facility houses approximately 80 pianos, including two Steinway Model D Concert Grand Pianos.
Colorado State University (CSU) is a land grant institution with a student enrollment of approximately 30,000 students in over 150 programs, and a faculty numbering 1,700. The College of Liberal Arts, within which the school is located, is the largest college in the University.
CSU is located in Fort Collins, Colorado, a beautiful city of 150,000 located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, 65 miles north of Denver. Outside magazine has named Fort Collins an “editor’s choice” for its “America’s Best Towns 2013” edition.

The Piano Technician works in cooperation with the academic and artistic programming of the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance (SMTD). Primary responsibilities include the tuning, maintenance and repair of all pianos within the University Center for the Arts (UCA) for both internal and external constituencies.
The schedule and scope of work is determined by the Piano Technician based on his/her independent analysis of each individual instrument, based on his/her professional experience and specialized training. This position will be responsible for managing a budget. The Piano Technician reports directly to the Director of the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.
The required work hours for this position will vary, and will include early mornings, evenings and weekends.
To be considered for this position, candidates must have:
- Three full-time years (36 months) of professional experience in the areas of piano tuning and maintenance is required.
Highly sought applicants will have many of the following:
- Steinway training and certification is preferred.
- Yamaha training and certification is preferred.
- Experience working in a university or conservatory is preferred.
- Demonstrate advanced skill in concert grand piano preparation, including piano tuning, action regulation, damper regulation, voicing, replacement of parts and repair.
- Demonstrated success with tuning, action regulation, voicing, repair, restoration and refinishing in order to maintain piano inventory of highest caliber; supervise contract vending.
- Demonstrated success and experience with piano rebuilding.
- Demonstrated success and experience with piano technology.
- Demonstrated ability to work closely with high-profile guest artists.
Essential Job Duties
Job Duty Category Tune, repair and maintain pianos in the school. Duty/Responsibility
- Tunes, repairs, maintains, and rebuilds pianos in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance (SMTD) according to his/her independent analysis of each instrument based on his/her professional judgment.
- Availability for work calls after hours and on weekends is expected.
- Schedules tuning, repair and maintenance of pianos for contracted rental events within the UCA. The scope of work is per the professional discretion of the Piano Technician according to his/her professional experience and specialized training. Availability for work calls after hours and on weekends is expected.
- Maintain and service piano humidity control systems throughout the UCA as needed, based on the independent analysis of the Piano Technician. Availability for work calls after hours and on weekends is expected.
- Oversees vending for contracted restoration and rebuilding of pianos, as needed, based on his/her professional experience and specialized training.
- Provides professional analysis for SMTD in judgments regarding piano relocation, purchase, loan, lease, and replacement.
- Provides leadership for SMTD academic departments in creating and implementing a long-term piano maintenance plan.
- Tracks and documents the condition and service of all pianos.
- Explores new methodologies and best practices for the maintenance and rebuilding of pianos as well as pursue professional development opportunities in the field.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.

- In cooperation with SMTD faculty and staff oversee the work of additional piano technicians, as needed.
