Assistant Curator – Special Collections

The UNSW Canberra Special Collections were established in 1985 and consist of 2.5 km of Australian literary and military manuscripts and 3,000 rare books. Our Special Collections are available for UNSW students and staff as well as external researchers from outside the university. Our strategic focus is improving client access to collections in supporting the research, teaching and learning needs of UNSW Canberra, and boosting external access in the long term.

An exciting opportunity exists for a qualified and experienced archival professional to join the expanding Special Collections team at UNSW Canberra. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work in close consultation with the Special Collections Curator to drive team-based, strategic and operational projects, while delivering the Special Collections reference service and improving and developing Special Collections systems and processes, as well as access and outreach.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A broad knowledge of Australian history, literature, and/or culture, and/or an in-depth knowledge in a subject of relevance to the collection e.g. Australian Literature and Theatre, Military History, Defence Studies.
  • Substantial experience working with archival manuscript collections and systems, including acquisition and control, and demonstrated experience in project management, archival systems, process improvement and in leading and managing a team.
  • Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills, including skills in developing policy and procedural documents.
  • A degree and/or postgraduate qualification in archival practice or other relevant discipline, with extensive relevant experience.
