About the opportunity
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) seeks to appoint a distinguished academic as Head of School of the Sydney School of Education and Social Work (SSESW). The appointee will have a record of original and innovative contributions to research, learning and teaching, and academic management.
The Head of School is a member of the senior management team of FASS. Under the broad direction of the Dean of FASS and within the general outlines of the Faculty Strategic Plan and the Faculty budget, the appointee will have the overall academic leadership, financial and management responsibility of the School.
The Head of School will provide leadership and support for the School’s teaching and research activities and will be responsible for its general management, including its staff, finances, and physical resources. The appointee will be an outstanding scholar in a field relevant to education and/or social work who respects and promotes the range of scholarly interests represented within SSESW. She/he will have a track record of effective leadership and management, ideally within the higher education sector. The appointee will demonstrate the capacity to think strategically, provide leadership and vision, oversee strategy development and implementation, and have high-level management skills including effective budget management, professional stakeholder engagement and the HR experience. In addition, the successful applicant will demonstrate excellent interpersonal and team building skills.
The Head of School will supervise and work closely with academic portfolio holders and professors in the School to ensure the provision of leadership across the key areas of learning and teaching, research, curriculum, professional engagement, community relations and development. Informed by the established and emergent research strengths of the School, the appointee will also be expected to contribute to the development and implementation of the School’s strategic direction.
While the focus of the position is academic management, it is expected that the appointee will continue to contribute to research and scholarship in her/his own discipline. Preference may be given to individuals with experience and expertise that will complement the existing teaching and research strengths of the School.
Term and remuneration
The successful applicant will be offered a full-time continuing position, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation and confirmation period for new appointees. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package, will hold the title of Professor, and will have a substantive continuing position in a relevant department.
