Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a 100% position as a PhD research fellowship position affiliated with the Department of Public Health and Nursing (ISM) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MH).

Information about the department

The Department of Public Health and Nursing (ISM) is responsible for research, teaching, innovation and communication within the fields of community medicine, nursing science, general practice and applied public health. The department’s activities within both research and teaching are particularly directed towards the needs of primary health care. The Department is also responsible for the Nord Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT).

Work description

This is a researcher training position aimed at providing promising researcher recruits the opportunity of academic development in the form of a doctoral degree.

Blockchains have started to inspire the health care and health science communities. We foresee various important impact areas for the technology including: (i) Data integrity and provenance. Blockchain-based systems may ensure improved sample tracking for enhanced transparency and trust. (ii) Data exchange and interoperability. Blockchain may empower cryptographically secured and irrevocable data exchange systems. (iii) Clinical and population-based research. Blockchain-enabled immutable records may improve errors and result reporting in clinical trials, smart-contracts for consents and de-identified phenotype transactions may transform population-based health studies.

The goal of this PhD project is to understand and assess blockchain technology usage in realistic health care and health science applications. We will utilise HUNT Cloud to experiment and assess technologies using real life health information. We will seek active participation in international consortia. We aim to use our insight to impact both policies and practices in the implementation of blockchain in the national and international health communities.

The research will be carried out within a program of 6 PhD projects under the heading of Trust and Transparency in Digital Society Through Blockchain Technology. This multi-disciplinary program includes technological aspects (cryptographic mechanisms, networking requirements, identity management), societal aspects and application areas. The program team involves 12 professors across several different departments and faculties. It is expected that the PhD fellow for this project will collaborate actively with other PhD fellows involved in the overall program and contribute to plenary meetings of the program. This program forms part of NTNU's Digital Transformation initiative.

The appointment is for a term of 3 years without teaching assistance, or up to 4 years including 25% of teaching assistance.
