There is a PhD position available at the Department of Sociology and Political Science, NTNU, in the project "DICE". The positions are temporary positions for a period of three years, but can be prolonged to four years with 25% teaching obligations. The candidate will join the exciting and growing Department of Sociology and Political Science (ISS) at NTNU. The department has a wide range of research areas such as sociology, political science, sports science, media, communications and information technology. The department has approximately 80 employees and 11 study programmes. ISS is characterised by strong disciplines in social science, with the emphasis on sociology and political science, which contributes to multidisciplinary study programmes and- research at the NTNU. Sociology and political science also influence the department`s sport science and media studies profile.

The project plan is available at The DICE project are principally based on qualitative and ethnographical methods. The positions will be connected to the institute’s research group and priority area "Digitalization and social life" (, and the candidates are expected to contribute actively to the activities of the research group and its visibility internally and externally.

PhD in «Digital infrastructures and empowerment in social interaction»

The third subproject will investigate transformations in social interaction, relations and everyday life in relation to social network services. Relevant themes are inclusion/exclusion, community-building, transparency and management. The project will involve the employment of different forms of qualitative methodologies, including online ethnography, observation and interviewing. Examples of possible cases for the study are general social media, dating applications and lifestyle/health platforms.

  • The candidate will be responsible for conducting the research within the respective subproject of DICE, and shall conduct this in co-operation with supervisor and the intentions of the DICe project plan.
  • The candidate shall deliver empirical material and contribute to the comparative analyses, that are an overarching goal of DICE.
  • The candidate shall participate and co-operate actively with the other candidates in the DICE-project and the members of the research group "Digitalization and social life", i.e. contribute to the organization of meetings, seminars and workshops, and disseminate from the project through scientific publishing and on websites, blogs and social media.
  • Since the candidates shall conduct case-studies in a Norwegian context, it is a clear advantage that the candidates have a good understanding of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, in addition to good oral and written literacy in English.
  • The candidate may be offered one additional year (25% position) of teaching duties in addition to the three years devoted to research, and shall in that case contribute with teaching or other duties within the responsibility area of the institute (primarily connected to the study portfolio in media studies and sociology). 


The following criteria will be important:

  • motivation for the participation in DICE
  • marks from master’s degree
  • relevant experience in research or from work or other
  • relevant methodological competence
  • experience in dissemination in Norwegian and English

The requirement for the position is a completed master’s degree in social science and/or media science degrees, preferably sociology or media studies with social science topics. Qualifications in qualitative methodology is desirable. Personal qualifications such as independence, initiative, cooperative spirit, and motivation to contribute to an including work milieu will be ascribed high importance.

Applicants must have a strong academic record from their previous studies, and must have a weighted average grade for the last two years of their master's or equivalent education (equivalent to 120 credits) of B or higher in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be admitted only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree. Candidates that are in the completion of their master degrees can apply, and will be considered, but will not be employed before they have completed their master degree.

Salary and Working Conditions

The PhD position is paid according to the national salary scheme, from gross NOK 436 900 per year, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension Scheme.
