Research Fellow in Welding & Joining
The transport sector is going through a technological revolution, with the low-carbon agenda and the move towards vehicle autonomy creating an unprecedented demand for research and development. In response, Coventry University has established the significant new Institute for Transport and Future Cities.
The Institute builds on the University's long association with the transport sector and brings together world-class expertise in disciplines across art and design, human factors, engineering, manufacturing, computer systems and business studies to deliver a vision of "safe and sustainable transport solutions fit forthe cities of the future". Covering the full spectrum of land, rail, air and water based transport, we address the whole innovation chain from design, materials, advanced manufacturing, systems and supply chain as well as the business environment. The Institute builds on some of our existing successful strategic partnerships with organisations such as Unipart, Horiba-MIRA and FEV.
As part of our research strategy we seek a talented research fellow to join our team in the Institute's Manufacturing Research Group to support the delivery of a growing portfolio of research projects. The post-holder will predominantly assist in the delivery of externally-funded research projects for a variety of UK and international organisations. This is an exciting opportunity for the post holder, offering the potential to develop and progress to build a reputation and network in this expanding, multi- and interdisciplinary research area.
With experience in a research environment and a good understanding of research methods with strong experimental focus, you should have a high level of knowledge in welding and brazing science, and other joining and additive manufacturing technologies, being able to apply this knowledge in a multi-disciplinary environment. The post-holder must be comfortable working in a laboratory or industrial environment.
You must have a PhD or have equivalent professional experience in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials science or metallurgical science. Excellent critical analysis, project management, communication skills and well-developed interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to work effectively in a team and on your own initiative. Some of the projects will involve working away from Coventry, with the need to travel elsewhere in the UK and world-wide for short periods.
