University of Essex

Professor and Co-Director/Director of the Institute for Analytics and Data Science (IADS)

We are a university where curiosity prevails, and where exploring new ways of thinking and pushing boundaries, isn’t just encouraged, it’s expected. We are committed to two things: excellence in education and excellence in research. Our ambition is to be acknowledged nationally and internationally as a leading research-intensive university and we are also committed to delivering a transformational educational experience for our students informed by our research.

For over half a century, the University of Essex has been the intellectual home of the world’s leading experts in analytics and data science. Our work spans the full spectrum of data science, from data storage and curation to the application of scientific knowledge to the real world. In 2014, we created the pan-University Institute for Analytics and Data Science (IADS), a centre of excellence that connects with scholars, businesses, institutes and authorities and which brings together over 100 academics and researchers working in analytics, data science and big data from across the University.

We are seeking to appoint a Co-Director/Director to shape and develop this young, yet high performing and ambitious Institute. Working alongside the Founding Director, Professor Maria Fasli, before taking on the role of Director in August 2020, they will provide senior academic leadership to deliver research, knowledge exchange and business engagement that has a positive impact on the world and that gives our work real value and a unique sense of purpose.

The successful candidate will have a distinguished academic record, and be of internationally excellent research standing. They will also hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and relevant academic expertise in an area related to data science, analytics or big data. A proven track record of academic leadership, raising grant income and experience of leading international academic partnerships will also be essential.

We are home to the curious, brave and bold. If you share our passion and have the skills and experience we seek, we would be keen to hear from you.
