PhD Position within Bipolar Bipolar Plates for Alkaline Water Electrolysis

One PhD fellowship is available at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering within the research area bipolar electrodes in the Norwegian research center MoZEES (Mobility Zero Emission Energy Systems, http://mozees.no).
The position is connected to existing activity at NTNU and affiliated project partners on alkaline water electrolysis systems. The work will focus on both durability and electrocatalytic activity of nickel-based materials as combined bipolar plates and active electrodes. The impact of morphology and surface composition towards the gas evolution reactions, as well as the ohmic resistance development will be investigated. The initial phases of the the work will emphasize the oxygen-evolving side of the electrode, which is subjected to the most positive potentials and therefore will require special attention from a durability and corrosion perspective. The PhD work will require efforts in surface preparation, structural and morphological characterization. Significant electrochemical characterization will be performed using conventional electrochemical techniques such as potential-step methods, voltammetry, rotating electrodes and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, for which the PhD candidate may expect access to world-class experimental facilities at NTNU. This project will also benefit from experimental capabilities at our project partners IFE and SINTEF.
The applicants should hold a Master of Science (MSc) degree or similar in one of the following areas or another related area such as chemistry, electrochemistry, nanotechnology, or material science. Candidates with experience from practical laboratory work relevant to the given project and/or materials chemistry will be preferred. We search for persons that are creative, innovative and can work independently. A background in electrochemistry and surface analysis will be considered an advantage. The applicants should have good communication skills and be fluent in English, both orally and written. The candidates will be part of a larger research group working on a variety of problems in electrochemistry chemistries as well as other energy storage technologies. It is thus important that the applicants are willing to collaborate with other researchers, enabling them to be a part of the team.

The regulations for PhD programs at NTNU state that the applicant must have a master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best). Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work related duties.
The appointment of the PhD will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.
The appointment has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of 1 year extension with 25 % teaching duties in agreement with the department. (To undertake the teaching duties, it is a requirement that the candidate speaks Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.)
The position as PhD is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution. Tentative start-date of the appointment will be August 6th 2018.
