York St John University is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of the historic city of York and there’s never been a more exciting time to join us.

After investing over £110 million in our campus and facilities, establishing nine new schools and developing a suite of attractive, contemporary courses, we’ve seen the greatest rise in UCAS applications in English universities over the past two years.

Central to our ambition is commitment to academic excellence. Over a third of our research is already considered world leading or internationally excellent. Our ambition is to increase our capacity to deliver world leading research, particularly research that has a significant real world impact and promotes social justice.

We’ve also created the conditions for quality teaching. We’re third in the UK for the proportion of our academics with formal teaching qualifications, a consistent Stonewall Top 100 employer and we hold the Social Enterprise Gold Mark for Responsible Business Practice. Our strength lies in our community: renowned for our friendly, supportive environment we will nurture your talent so that you can accomplish your ambitions.

Expanding our STEM portfolio is a key strategic priority for York St John University. Alongside rebalancing the University’s humanities and sciences portfolio this will open up new opportunities and inspire an intellectual renaissance on campus. We are seeking to recruit a Senior Lecturer in Biosciences. The role is offered part-time (0.5 FTE), with a possibility of full-time opportunities arising. The working pattern is negotiable.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing the Undergraduate Curriculum for Biosciences (Biology, Biochemistry and Nutrition), and lead on programme validation and accreditation. A well-developed record of research publications and grant success within the discipline is considered essential. The successful candidate is also expected to have experience of curriculum development in STEM, alongside knowledge of the subject benchmark statements within the discipline. You will lead the development and delivery of Biosciences within the Office of the PVC Science, under their direction.

For informal enquiries, please contact Professor Andy Smith, PVC Science on a.smith@yorksj.ac.uk.

Please refer to Section 6.3 of the below 'Senior Lecturer criteria' document and provide evidence within the 'supporting statements' section of your application to demonstrate that you meet the requirements.

We are committed to diversity and inclusion within our workforce and welcome applications from all backgrounds. We particularly welcome applications from females who are nationally underrepresented within STEM roles.

In addition to a competitive salary and the opportunity to work at our beautiful campus in the heart of York, YSJ employees enjoy access to a superb range of benefits including –

  • Generous annual leave entitlement (plus additional leave days during our Christmas closure period)
  • Pension scheme
  • Health cash plan
  • Training and development
  • Discounts at a wide range of high street brands and local companies, including shops, cinemas and gyms.

Please note that CVs will not be accepted in place of the application form.
