The Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (IE), http://www.ntnu.edu/ie at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a 100% position (3 years) as a PhD student at the Department of Electric Power Engineering (IE) http://www.ntnu.edu/elkraft. The described PhD position is part of the research within the “Innovative hybrid energy system for stable power and heat supply in offshore oil and gas installation (HES-OFF)” project. HES-OFF is a joint research project between NTNU and two industrial partners: Prototech AS and Lundin AS.

Information about the department of Electric Power Engineering

Currently there are 12 Professors, 7 Associate Professors and 4 Lecturers at the Department of Electric Power Engineering. In addition, there are 4 Adjunct Professors, 2 Adjunct Associate Professors, 9 Postdoctoral researchers, 3 Researchers, about 35 PhD students, and 15 technical/administrative staff. Research activities are organized under two research groups: Power Systems Group and Power Technology Group. The department has a good laboratory infrastructure for research and education, as well as a mechanical workshop, supported by a technical staff of 10 persons.

The department has a wide range of teaching responsibilities, ranging from fundamental education in electric power engineering for other engineering students, Master’s programs in Energy and Environment, International MSc programs within Electric Power Engineering and Wind Energy, as well as PhD education and continuing education.

Work description

Due to the very high greenhouse gas emissions caused by the oil and gas industry in Norway, there is a strong commitment to identifying and implementing more sustainable solutions. The HES-OFF project aims at exploiting offshore wind energy to supply power to an oil and gas platform, concurrently with a traditional gas turbine. The overall scope of the project is to prove the feasibility of this hybrid system, optimizing the operation of all its different components, where the main challenge from an electrical standpoint is the need to ensure the stable and efficient operation of the isolated grid, despite the high intermittency of the wind energy resource.

Currently, there is one vacant PhD position available at NTNU within the field of “Wind power integration into an offshore oil and gas microgrid: from design to small-scale validation”.

The successful PhD candidate is expected to model the offshore grid (including the wind-turbine, the traditional gas turbine, a fuel cell system used as energy storage, and the interconnecting electrical infrastructure) and subsequently design control strategies for the operability of the microgrid under both normal and contingency conditions. In particular, a close cooperation is expected with a Post Doc candidate at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering, working on detailed modeling and optimization of the gas turbine operation in order to coordinate and integrate simulation models of the different subsystems.

An integral part of the PhD project will be the testing of the proposed microgrid design and control solutions through Hardware in the Loop testing at the National Smart Grid Laboratory of NTNU.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) within electrical engineering and have a strong background in power system stability and control of power electronic systems. Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop testing (especially with OPAL-RT) will be an advantage. Scientific publications in relevant international journals and conferences are merited.

The candidates must have excellent analytical and collaboration skills as well as an ability to work independently as well as in team.

Applicants are required to submit a one-page research proposal within the proposed research area.

Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English.

(CPE). Minimum scores are:

  • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

Formal regulations for PhD

Appointments are made in accordance with the regulations in force regarding terms of employment for PhD candidates issued by the Ministry of Education and Research, with relevant parts of the additional guidelines for appointment as a PhD candidate at NTNU. Applicants must undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme of study during their period of employment. The person who is appointed must comply with the conditions that apply at any time to employees in the public sector. In addition, a contract will be signed regarding the period of employment.

Salary conditions

The PhD position is in code 1017 Research fellow, and is remunerated at a gross NOK 436 900 – 537 700 per year, depending on qualifications. A deduction of 2% is made as a statutory contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
