A PhD position is available at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science. The appointment has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of until 1 year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department. The position is financed by the FRIMEDBIO program of the Norwegian Research Council (RCN) and will be linked to the project “How to build a glass house: Revealing fundamental components of diatom cell wall biomineralization”.

Job description

The PhD candidate will work on a project aiming to decipher components involved in synthesis and patterning of the diatom cell wall. A defining feature of diatoms is the generation of porous, hierarchically nano- and micropatterned, amorphous SiO2 (silica) forming the diatom cell wall. We have identified a gene family in diatoms encoding transmembrane proteins with a likely role in organising silica biomineralization and cell wall patterning. The PhD candidate will generate knockout lines for members of this gene family in two diatom species using CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing, which recently has been established in diatoms at our lab. Mutants will be characterised with regards to cell wall morphology at nano-, micro and mesoscale. Gene family members will be selected for recombinant expression in E. coli followed by purification. Biochemical properties of the recombinant proteins will be characterised.

Detailed information on our PhD programs is found at: http://www.ntnu.edu/nv/phd

Qualifications

The applicant must have an MSc (or equivalent) in cell/molecular biology/biotechnology or biochemistry. Molecular genetics and some bioinformatics skills are required. Documented experience with relevant imaging techniques and/or recombinant protein work will be considered an advantage. The successful candidate should be dedicated and creative, with a strong ability to work problem-oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams.

Requirements for admittance to the PhD programmes at NTNU is a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of university studies, an average grade of B or better within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc. Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree: http://ec.europa.eu/education/tools/diploma-supplement_en.htm
