This an exciting opportunity to join the leadership team of a successful Faculty, and to help shape the identity of a new School.

The University of Portsmouth is a dynamic, ambitious, institution with a track record of success.  One of only four universities in the south east of England to achieve a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework exercise, it is ranked in the top 40 in the Guardian University Guide, and among the top 500 universities in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is seeking to appoint an exceptional and highly motivated individual to lead a new School that will include Sociology and Social Psychology, Education (including Initial Teacher Training), and Childhood and Youth Studies.

The new School will comprise some 50 academic staff and approximately 1000 FTE undergraduate / 130 FTE postgraduate (taught and research) students.  Staff in the new School are involved in a number of exciting research and innovation projects, many of which are supported through external funding.

As Head of School you will be formally responsible for leading and managing the academic business of the School in relation to both strategic and operational matters. As a member of the Faculty Executive, you will contribute to the development of Faculty strategy, and implement this at School level.  Supported by senior colleagues, you will have responsibilities for line management and staff development. Collegial, approachable and visible, you will work closely with the Dean, Faculty Executive team, and senior staff to provide decisive leadership.

This is a unique opportunity for an outstanding individual to drive success within an ambitious and prosperous School of the University.
