Based in the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies at the Open University, the School of Languages and Applied Linguistics offers modules and qualifications in Modern Languages, English Language and Applied Linguistics, Translation Studies, English for Academic Purposes, and Intercultural Communication. 

Being part of the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies, we are at the cutting edge of pedagogy and of distance and online education. Our research on technology-enhanced language learning and teaching is of strategic importance to the University and our research in applied linguistics of international reputation. We produce innovative and rigorous research that focuses on empirical investigation, the development of theory, and practical applications. Recent research has been funded by the ESRC, AHRC, BAAL and HEA as well as charitable bodies such as the Carnegie UK Trust, Rix-Thompson-Rothenberg Foundation, and the British Council, Education Development Trust.

We are especially interested in candidates doing research in areas relating to

  • Technology-enhanced language learning
  • Language learning and teaching
  • Applied Linguistics
  • Intercultural Communication

You will have internationally recognised research expertise in your field, proven research leadership experience and an outstanding teaching track record.  You are required to have a PhD in a relevant discipline and possess excellent inter-personal skills and experience to support the development of research, curriculum and external engagement in your field.

You will have a successful track record of leading and securing external research funding, experience of working in a senior academic role, mentoring and developing others and supervision at PhD level.

You will have the opportunity to work in teams designing and delivering innovative, high quality and challenging learning experiences for our students.
