Job Description

The Bhatnagar Lab of Microbial Ecology is seeking a highly motivated research technician to work on the molecular mechanisms of microbial species interactions during litter decomposition. This position will spearhead studies related to the NSF Proposal #7497919, entitled Collaborative Research: Molecular mechanisms and biogeochemical consequences of decomposer species interactions during succession in ecosystems. The technician assigned to the project will work primarily in the PIs laboratory at Boston University, with opportunities to work in metaproteomics and metatranscriptomics in collaboration with co-PI Daniel Cullens laboratory at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. At Boston University, the research technician will be responsible for 1) performing routine sample preparation for DNA and RNA sequencing, protein characterization, and extracellular enzyme assays; 2) setting up ecological experiments with fungal cultures using sterile technique; and 3) biochemical analysis of fungal growth and activity. The laboratory management aspect of the position will entail training undergraduate student research assistants in the laboratory.Experience with microbiology research and/or sterile technique required. Preference will be given to applicants that have prior experience working with culture collections, protein processing, and/or RNA extraction and cDNA library preparation. Experience in scientific writing a plus.

Required Skills

B.A./B.S.,in Biology or Biochemistry and up to one year of experience required.
