PhD Position within Marine Cybernetics
We have an open PhD position related to this topic:
- Adaptive and collaborative vehicle behavior for mission management for autonomous underwater vehicles.
The vehicles in the system should be able to use the measurements for re-planning its mission. The target features of the mission should be detected online and this information should be used by the system to optimize the mission. E.g. if the vehicle is out looking for ocean front zones between water bodies, the vehicle will detect this and optimize the trajectory to measure the characteristics of the front optimally. The water bodies are normally characterized by salinity and temperature measured from CTD, both also chlorophyll, oxygen and turbidity will often distinguish two water bodies. The system should also be able to receive information from other units in the network and use this information in the continuous mission planning and re-planning. The work will be both theoretical and field driven and the aim of the operations is to provide improved data and data acquisition methods for marine research in the Arctic.
The position is affiliated with the research project The Nansen Legacy (http://nansenlegacy.org). The Nansen Legacy is the Norwegian Arctic research community’s joint effort to establish a holistic understanding of a changing marine Arctic climate and ecosystem. The project will provide a scientific knowledge base needed for future sustainable resource management in the transitional Barents Sea and the adjacent Arctic Basin. It is a collaborative project between ten Norwegian research institutions, and will run from 2018-2023. Activities in the project will include international cooperation, and several cruises with the new, ice-going research vessel Kronprins Haakon.
The position requires a Master’s degree in marine technology, engineering cybernetics or a similar relevant area. The successful candidate should be enthusiastic and highly motivated and be willing to work both independently and with other researchers also from other disciplines of research. The successful candidate must also fulfill the requirement for admission to a doctoral program.
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 436 900 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
