Position Summary

The Food Service Equipment and Safety Specialist on Colorado State University’s main campus is responsible for maintaining the dining facilities by sourcing, coordinating, and planning food service equipment purchases and maintenance, as well as leading environmental health and safety initiatives. This position will assist in the sourcing and procurement of all food service equipment by following the state bid system. They will schedule and coordinate the execution of all preventive maintenance, new installations, and repair and replacements of equipment in dining locations with HDS facilities management resulting in timely, accurate completion resulting in well maintained, up- to- date and safe facilities. They will be responsible for food service equipment budget preparation, strategic planning, development of written equipment specifications, and assist with future facility planning and development of dining centers. They will assure all food production areas are clean and safe by instructing dining center management on proper cleaning methods, as a well as, coordinate environmental health and safety initiatives with HDS Facilities in the front of house dining areas. They will need to have the ability to work collaborative, and in cooperation with many departments including HDS Facilities Management, CSU Facilities Management, off-campus contractors and vendors, Residential Dining Services Management, and Senior Team.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university and two years of professional experience sourcing commercial food service equipment.
  • Possess relevant technical knowledge of commercial food service equipment.
  • Have knowledge of electrical, air handling, heating and refrigeration systems.
  • Have understanding of building codes, laws, regulations and safety procedures.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • 3 years’ experience in repair and maintenance of commercial food service equipment.
  • Experience as a supervisor or lead food service equipment technician.
  • Possess software proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, and Bluebeam.
  • Experience writing equipment specifications and procurement.
  • Project management including equipment layout experience.
  • Experience in leading custodial staff.
  • Experience in creating a preventative maintenance plan.
  • Any additional skilled trade certifications.

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Assessment & Planning Management Duty/Responsibility

With the Senior Associate Director and General Managers complete a yearly physical inspection of all facilities to create a documented list of repair and replacement for food service equipment, and facilities.

Working with an annual budget of $200,000, this position will determine priorities, and cost estimates. Determining life cycles of all major food service equipment, help propose future spending, and create budgetary guidelines and strategic planning for when the equipment needs to be replaced. Research brands, specifications, best practices, and make recommendations to spend department monies wisely.

Coordinate with RDS management and Senior Associate Director on any new project requirements, materials, cost estimates, and time lines. Be the liaison with all parties involved to discuss modifications and facilitate resolutions and results.

Be a champion for sourcing, repairing, replacing, and maintaining equipment that reduces resource use, such as electricity, natural gas, and water consumption.

Percentage Of Time 40 % Job Duty Category Procurement & Equipment Management Duty/Responsibility

Manage the process with HDS Facilities for new equipment installation, removal of old equipment, repair and replacement in the dining centers. Complete online project proposals, gain approvals, document all processes, and assure they are uploaded to Share-Point.

Working with RDS’ warehouse staff and CSU Surplus Property, manage excess equipment. Determine the proper storage or disposal methods.

Provide training and demonstrations to staff on proper use, cleaning, and safety instructions for the operation of all food service equipment. This includes, but is not limited to chemicals, environmental and safety concerns, SDA, OSHA regulations, sanitation and safety as defined by CSU manuals, handbooks, HACCP standards, Colorado Food Code, and other industry standards.

Interface with foodservice manufacture and distributor representatives to properly source, procure, resolve issues, and coordinate training.

Keep up to date on current trends and product information as related to the food service equipment and facilities.

Manage, document, and keep a currently list of commercial RDS food service equipment, including all manuals.

Percentage Of Time 30% Job Duty Category Preventive Maintenance & Custodial Service Management Duty/Responsibility

With HDS Facilities, develop and coordinate all preventative maintenance schedules for food service equipment in the dining units. Continuously verify the preventative maintenance is completed and documented.

With HDS Facilities and RDS management, coordinate all environmental health, safety, and custodial initiatives to keep all dining centers clean and orderly. Conduct monthly meetings with RDS management and HDS Facilities representatives to address on-going environmental health and safety and custodial issues.

Percentage Of Time 20 % Job Duty Category Ergonomic and Safety Management Duty/Responsibility

With the Office of Risk Management, coordinate an Ergonomic Team to manage risk assessments and processes with an end goal to reduce risk job related injuries for employees in the dining centers resulting in a reduction in departmental on- the –job injuries.

As part of the senior administrative team attend and participate in all meetings, and in the development of new or renovated dining centers.

Effectively communicate and interact and work with other department staff in the performance of the duties.

Represent Residential Dining Services on task force, committee meetings and councils.
