The Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium (ITM – www.itg.be) is one of the world's leading institutes for advanced research, post-graduate training and expert assistance in tropical medicine and public health. Under the motto "Excellence and Relevance", ITM works with scientific institutions, governments and organisations worldwide towards scientific progress and better health in low- and middle-income countries. ITM also houses a specialised outpatient clinic and the full scope of administrative and logistical support services. It has annual revenues of € 60 million and employs over 400 staff. ITM is an autonomous academic institute with an interuniversity character which draws its core funding from the Flemish Ministries of Education and Science, program funding from the Belgian Federal Ministries of Development Cooperation, Public Health and Science Policy, and project funding from a range of national and international science and development agencies.
ITM’s Board of Governors seeks to appoint a new Executive Director. In addition to implementing the resolutions adopted by the Board of Governors, the Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day administration and management of ITM. The Executive Director is assisted by a management committee, which s/he chairs, and which includes the three Heads of Department (Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Public Health) and the General Manager. The Executive Director will be responsible for (i) the strategy and long term policy plan - e.g. by preparing the strategy for Board approval and translating it into an institutional policy plan; (ii) the management and governance - e.g. by taking responsibility of overall management of the research, education and health activities as well as its supporting financial and administrative functions; and (iii) external relations – e.g. by building effective relationships at the highest levels with all stakeholders (including national and international governments, public authorities, health organisations, NGOs, academic institutions, and the healthcare industry).
A successful candidate will have a relevant scientific PhD degree with solid academic curriculum in fields such as biomedical sciences, clinical sciences or public health. S/he will be a world recognised leader in the field of tropical medicine with at least 10-year experience as academic, M.D. or scientist, or with at least 10-year experience in a leading position within an international (preferably in tropical countries) multidisciplinary, science-driven organisation, institution or corporation. S/he will have solid management and/or partnership experience with/in international organisations with a focus on healthcare/public health; strong business acumen, strategically as well as operationally; and international experience in/with prominent universities or research centres. S/he will have confirmed proficiency in English. Fluency in Dutch and French is preferred.
