Applications are invited for a 2-year Post-Doctoral research position in the field of radio architectures or RF deployment strategies in the Department of Electronic Engineering, Maynooth University. The successful applicant will be joining the research group led by Prof. Ronan Farrell, and the research aims to explore architectural approaches to propagation and coverage issues in deployed RF networks, with particular emphasis on 5G networks in urban and rural environments. We are particularly interested in candidates who can understand the role of both RF performance and network architectures in achievable user performance.

The work will be undertaken in the context of the SFI CONNECT Centre for the Internet of Things and the successful applicant will need to play a key role in the development of relationships with our industrial partners as well as help drive the research agenda.

Principal Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the activities of the research institute, help set and deliver on a research agenda, support collaboration on our projects and mentor and assist the research projects of students where possible.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in radio systems, propagation and coverage modelling, or an understanding of 4G and 5G systems. The candidate should be capable of independent research with a structured approach to reporting and achieving goals. The candidate will be expected to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate researchers, particularly to newly recruited PhD students. The group has a strong experimental background, so the ideal candidate should be able contribute with their technical skills in the design, execute and analysis of experiments.

Applicants would benefit from having obtained a PhD in a relevant discipline, however relevant industrial experience is both an acceptable alternative and highly desirable.

Essential Skills:

  • Experience with system level RF design, including propagation, signal and noise budgeting;
  • Understanding of LTE-A and 5G-NR radio systems.
  • Optimising access network performance.
  • Strong experimental skills, particularly in the area of field measurements and data analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills and fluent in English.
