PhD Position within Marine Hydrodynamics

We have an open PhD position related to this topic:
Ship performance monitoring and optimization using in-service measurements and big data analysis methods.
Ships are equipped with an increasing number of sensors, and the measurements taken with the sensors are often collected in integrated data collection and monitoring systems that communicate data to shore for further analysis, and/or for onboard processing and utilization. However, there is a great and mainly untapped potential for using such data for improved performance monitoring and also for (automatic) optimization of the ship operation. The data taken concerns many aspects of the ship performance, but for the current PhD project the hydrodynamics-related performance parameters, such as the speed-power performance, seakeeping and maneuvering will be the primary focus. Detection or estimation of sea state, speed-through-water and frictional resistance are important issues. Just as important are data cleaning and validation.
The position is part of the 8-year long research project on improved energy efficiency and reduced harmful emissions from shipping, called SFI Smart Maritime http://www.smartmaritime.no, which was started in 2015.
The position requires a Master’s degree in marine technology, industrial mathematics, data analytics or a similar relevant area. The successful candidate should be enthusiastic and highly motivated and be willing to work both independently and with other researchers. Good oral and written English skills are important. The successful candidate must also fulfill the requirement for admission to a doctoral program.
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 436 900 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.
The position is of 3 years duration, without any teaching duties.
