About the opportunity   

As part of its Strategic Plan 2016-2020, the University of Sydney has committed to the establishment of a new Faculty of Medicine and Health. This strategy is designed to enhance the University’s capacity to lead the education and development of health professionals and to conduct research that will meet the requirements and drive modern developments in the delivery of integrated health care.  

The Senior Manager, Faculty Operations has responsibility for the administration and management of day to day operating activity for the faculty and for achieving its operational objectives.

This new position provides operational management, expert advice, high level guidance and input in the development and implementation of strategy, policy and planning. The Senior Manager is also responsible for providing strategic advice and management support to the Faculty General Manager and the Faculty Leadership Group on a broad range of issues, reviews and other business as usual functions including workforce and operational resources and usage related administration, support student lifecycle needs and building and space allocation. Ensures effective general management of operational and administrative systems, processes and programs and implements governance and key compliance requirements for the faculty in alignment with University policies and practices.

This role is part of the faculty professional leadership team led by the Faculty General Manager. The position is responsible for providing strategic advice, expert operational management support to the Faculty General Manager and the overall Faculty Leadership Group. Working closely with colleagues and designated support staff within the Schools, the Senior Manager has carriage of and responsibility for its portfolio specific activities and aspects of leadership and management within the Faculty.

A key function for the first 6-12 months will be designing and building the function at Faculty level; this will entail working with the Faculty Leadership Group (as members commence) and the existing administrative staff within Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy and the Schools of Public Health and Medical Sciences to ensure that the systems and processes implemented at Faculty level are the most effective and best practice and in line with the Sydney Operating Model.

About you

  • postgraduate qualifications with extensive relevant experience in business administration or related field and/or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience
  • excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with a variety of matters.
  • demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work.
  • proven management experience at a senior level; together with flexibility, capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and environments and, when necessary, navigating through ambiguity
  • excellent time and workload management skills with demonstrated ability to prioritise effectively, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines and achieve required outcomes and effectively deliver results.
  • demonstrated experience in the supervision, training, mentoring and performance management of staff; and experience managing and resolving a diverse range of HR issues.
  • financial management experience and literacy, experience managing budgets and controlling income and expenditure.
  • effectively managing a diverse group of key stakeholders on large or complex projects and the ability to develop/cultivate productive relationships with industry providers and key users.
  • strong business acumen and strategic thinking skills together with effective leadership and people management skills.
