A Postdoctoral position is available at the NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Industrial and Mechanical Engineering.

The appointment has a duration of 2 years.  


To meet the expectations of continuous down scaling and to use less precious material; advances in thin film manufacturing continue to push the limits of miniaturization. Using Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), we possess a manufacturing technique that routinely combines a broad selection of metals, transition metals and ceramics while allowing the deposition of films with single atomic layer precision. To fully utilize these manufacturing capabilities, we have to understand material and electronic properties of the films we are depositing, i.e. we require a characterization technique that is equally precise at revealing a wealth of information at these minuscule quantities. Competence shall be developed for the deposition and characterization of ultrathin perovskite metal-oxide and metal-sulfide thin films used for high-k and solar cell applications. The candidate has to bring in and extend world-leading knowledge on the characterization of such ultrathin films of below 50 nm. The candidate will establish new methods of in situ characterization of these ternary oxide and sulphide films to better the understanding of their electronic and geometric structure and to tune their performance.

The research will be conducted at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in collaboration with the Department of Physics at NTNU Trondheim.  


The applicant must have a PhD from a renowned institution in chemistry, materials science or mechanical engineering and a documented background in high-resolution spectroscopic characterization of ultrathin films. Work experience in the synchrotron will be preferred. The candidate shall have worked independently and shall have a documented record of accomplishment in the characterization of ALD thin films. Experience with high-k and solar cell thin film applications will be preferred. The candidate shall have proven capacity and skills in writing and publishing scientific articles in renowned journals and shall have disseminated her/his work at scientific conferences. The candidate shall have a minimum of 10 journal articles published in the field in the last 5 years (since 2013). She/He will consult various stakeholders from different fields. Experience in managing international industrial projects, a background in project management and strong language skills in English (oral and written) are prerequisites.  

Excellent English skills, spoken and written, are required. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).  

Conditions of appointment  

Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 485 700 per annum before tax. The salary is adjusted according to the recent wage negotiations. There will be a 2% deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
The appointment of the Postdoctoral fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. The Postdoctoral fellowship is awarded for 2 years.
