Melbourne School of Population & Global Health

The University of Melbourne

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at The University of Melbourne is the pre-eminent faculty of medicine, public health and health sciences in Australia, and a world leader in its class. The Faculty, renowned for global leadership in health research, policy, and practice, is Australia’s largest biomedical and health research faculty and was ranked 9th globally in 2018 by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The Faculty’s new strategic plan, Beyond 2018 ( sets out the ambition to change the world of health and healthcare and ensure that the Faculty remains Australia’s leading health and biomedical faculty.

As one of 5 graduate Schools within the Faculty, the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health has expertise in many disciplines including epidemiology and biostatistics, health economics, psychology, health social sciences and humanities (sociology, anthropology, history, demography, ethics), health promotion, and health policy. There is considerable expertise in Indigenous health mental health, communicable and non-communicable disease prevention and control, and in global health, especially in health systems and health security in the developing world. The School is home to four Centres, one of which is the Centre for Health Policy, and one Institute (the Nossal Institute for Global Health). The Centre for Health Policy is structured in four themes; Health Economics, Population Ageing and Demography, Health Services Research, and Law and Public Health. The Centre interacts with colleagues across the Faculty and broader University including colleagues from the renowned Melbourne Institute of Applied Economics and Social Research.

The Centre is now seeking to appoint a Chair in Health Economics following the exit of the Foundation Chair in Health Economics, Professor Philip Clarke FASSA to take up the Chair in Health Economics at the University of Oxford.  With a PhD in Health Economics or a related field, candidates should have demonstrated track record as a leader in the field. The successful candidate will build on the platform in health economics established by Professor Clarke, and will further develop existing research collaborations and forge new research partnerships with key external stakeholders. The Chair will provide leadership in teaching and learning in health economics for both award courses (such as the Master of Public Health) and in short courses. Evidence of engaging and contributing to the national health policy debates would be considered advantageous.

It is also possible that a suitable appointee could be considered for the role as Director of the Centre for Health Policy, though this is not a requirement for the position of Chair in Health Economics.
