Executive Dean of Engineering and Digital Technology

Full time management contract, based in Preston

This new role will sit alongside the established Executive Dean and together they will work to manage the extended and ambitious portfolio within the Faculty of Science and Technology. The School of Engineering, and the School of Physical Sciences and Computing, will report directly into this post.
The University is investing and strengthening our provision in engineering and digital technology in response to the rapid expansion of the portfolio, the realisation of the ambitious EIC project, and new partnerships such as with apprenticeship provider Training2000.

The Faculty of Science and Technology prides itself on effectively working in partnership with relevant industries and sectors to be the provider of choice for their HE, research and KE needs. By working in a transdisciplinary way the Faculty aims to drive and support the definition and response to the requirements of industry, business, the community and the public sector.
The Executive Dean will provide informed strategic direction to the Faculty’s academic developments. Although academic leadership for the Faculty will be an integral function of the post, the role will focus on the implementation and delivery of academic policies and strategies. The successful candidate will be expected to work within an academic leadership team that is led by the DVC Academic, comprising other Executive Deans, academic PVCs, and the Burnley Provost. This team will help to shape University policy, help to implement a dynamic change programme that will revitalise the curriculum, improve the student experience, and develop research and engagement with the wider stakeholder community.

In addition, with Directors of Service, Executive Deans will strive to deliver standardised and consistent approaches to organisation and management that improve business efficiency and the quality of service to our students and other stakeholders. They will need to show awareness of the emerging HE policy landscape and the ability to deal with change in a capable and agile fashion.

Educated to postgraduate level, with a doctorate or equivalent in a relevant field, the successful candidate will have highly developed interpersonal skills that will allow them to establish and maintain credibility, confidence and trust from a variety of stakeholders.

The successful applicant will have a strong record of leadership, strategic development and line management as well as experience of working as part of a leadership team ideally within a large faculty. Substantial strategic awareness of higher education and understanding of national and international trends, the current funding environment and emerging government policy are also essential.
