The Arts and Humanities division at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to appoint an Instructor and Production Manager in the Theater program starting in Fall 2018. This is a full-time academic support position suited for someone who has extensive knowledge and experience working in theater production and with students in an academic setting. The work of the NYU Abu Dhabi Theater Program explores both the center and edges of Theater and Performance. As Production Manager, the successful candidate will envision and facilitate paths for problem solving unique to each project produced or co-produced by the NYUAD Theater Program, while pioneering sustainable systems and structures of production for the program. As an Instructor, the Production Manager is an academic support position, whose primary role is the technical support of curricular and extra-/co-curricular projects.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: working directly with faculty, students, and guest companies, directors, and artists to support the successful completion of class assignments and projects, as well as all extra- and co-curricular productions and projects; developing and conducting technical workshops and safety training seminars for students and faculty; implementing and overseeing extra-curricular opportunities for groups of student directors, designers, dramaturgs, and stage managers to gain practical experience; coordinating with program leadership on elements relating to production and program budget; supervising load-in, technical rehearsals, performances, and load-out of all productions and projects within the Theater Program’s production and rehearsal spaces; collaborating with Arts Center and Arts & Humanities staff to foster collegial and progressive educational experiences for the NYUAD Theater students; liaising with senior students and their collaborators on the technical implementation of Capstones; and contributing to the overall success of the Theater program and other Arts programs and projects by performing all other relevant duties and responsibilities as assigned. The scope of the job may require working evenings and/or weekends, particularly prior to openings of theatre production presentations.
Applicants must have a BA or BFA degree. Concentration in Theater and/or MFA in Theater preferred. At least two-to-four years practical work experience in production management and a demonstrated ability to mentor is required.
Applicants must have strong oral and written communications skills, excellent supervisory and mentorship skills, as well as basic operational knowledge of theatrical equipment related to lighting, sound, and video. The ability to read and understand floor plans, color renderings, electrical schematics, and advanced construction plans or blueprints is necessary as well as the ability to instruct on material relevant to technical production labs. A working knowledge of mechanical skills related to scenic construction and the use of hand and power tools, and basic operational knowledge of software programs related to theatrical production (such as QLab, Vectorworks and/or AutoCAD, Isadora, etc.) are preferred. Maintaining knowledge of protocols and regulations to ensure compliance with government and University health and safety regulations is a must (e.g. OSHA, EPA, etc).
