Applications are invited for appointment as tenure-track Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, to commence on July 1, 2019 or as soon as thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Direct tenure may be offered to outstanding candidate for the Associate Professor rank.

The Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences was set up in 2001 with a mission to promote innovative, cross-disciplinary scholarship. It believes that a broad humanist education is essential to the construction of a modern civil society. It is hosted by the University of Hong Kong and supported by public and private donations. Through research training and teaching programs that transcend disciplinary and institutional boundaries, the Institute has developed a diverse platform that bond a critical mass of scholars, professionals and postgraduates in Hong Kong and abroad. Information about the Institute can be obtained at http://www.hkihss.hku.hk/aboutus.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree preferably in the humanities and social sciences, broadly defined to include other disciplines, but their expertise should be related to the research foci of the Institute. They should be able to demonstrate potential for a vigorous trajectory of research, teaching and publication. For applicants for the Associate Professor rank, they should also have experience in administration, with competence to collaborate with internal and external academic partners. Experience in an institution of a similar nature would be a clear advantage.

The appointee is expected to assume teaching duties and be committed to high quality scholarly research and services. He/She is also expected to participate in the development of the Institute’s research and outreach programs.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with the appointee's qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.

Applicants should send a completed application form and an up-to-date C.V. to the Institute at ihsshrfi@hku.hk. Three confidential reference letters should be sent directly by the referees. Please indicate clearly the level you wish to be considered for. Application forms (341/1111) can be downloaded at http://www.hr.hku.hk/apptunit/form-ext.doc and further particulars can be obtained at http://jobs.hku.hk/. Closes June 30, 2018.

The University thanks applicants for their interest, but advises that only candidates shortlisted for interviews will be notified of the application result.
