Computations of Reacting and Non-Reacting Particle-Laden Flows Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering

  • Advance current capabilities to compute the structure and dynamics of flows laden with particles. This is highly relevant for environmental flows, the synthesis of materials, sprays in both reacting applications such as engines and non-reacting applications such as agricultural and pharmaceutical flows.
  • Full-time fixed term for 2 years subject to satisfactory probation. Remuneration package: $106K-114K p.a. which includes base salary, leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation.

About the opportunity 

We are currently inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computations of Reacting and Non-Reacting Particle-Laden Flows. The position is funded by the Australian Research Council and will be held in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering. The challenge is to correctly simulate the dynamics and evolution of droplets and solid particles in turbulent flows loaded with a dense spray which atomises and reacts while producing solid particles. The atomization process is critical and must be accounted for along with the chemistry involved in the combustion process and subsequent synthesis of particles. The long-term objective is to optimise the synthesis of functional materials using Flame Spray Pyrolysis.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computations of Reacting and Non-Reacting Particle-Laden Flows, who has:

  • PhD in Engineering or Science, or a related discipline.
  • Excellent proven skills in the fields of numerical combustion, turbulence modelling, spray combustion and/or chemical kinetics development.
  • Experience in large eddy simulations, sub-grid scale modelling, development and reduction of chemical kinetic mechanisms would be useful.
  • Expert knowledge of computational fluid dynamics and basic knowledge of heat and mass transfer is assumed.

While international candidates may apply, preference would be given to citizens and permanent residents of Australia according to ARC guidelines.

About us

The combustion group at the University of Sydney has an international reputation in the field of turbulent combustion, combustion modelling and advanced laser diagnostics. Specific research issues include the combustion of bio-fuels, turbulence-chemistry interactions in flames ranging from fully premixed to stratified and non-premixed, auto-ignition of both gaseous and liquid fuels, spray atomisation, combustion safety in deflagrations, oxy-combustion and quenching of radicals on solid surfaces. Burners developed by the group are now established as international benchmarks for the development and validation of numerical tools in combustion. Computational codes developed by the group are used by various international research institutions.

Both experimental and numerical projects are conducted in parallel providing a platform for continuous development and validation. The combustion laboratory is one of a handful of laboratories around the world with advanced laser diagnostics capabilities such as high speed PIV and high speed LIF (10kHz) as well as standard PIV, LDV, PDA, Raman, Rayleigh and LIF. Computational capabilities include Large Eddy Simulations (LES), Probability Density Function (PDF) and Multiple Mapping Conditioning (MMC) approaches; as well as more standard RANS based methods.
